How many rounds should you keep on hand?

I posted the same question a few months back in the reloading section, and found most reloaders keep between 1000 and 2000 per gun on hand. I (since the recent turn for the worst in the gun world) have started to load up for the 2000 per gun mark. How do I store it? In mtm boxes, under the stairs, in a locked room where I keep the only key in the gun safe.

P229 Sport and 357 SIG, Perfection!

I have picked a WTSHTF starting date and estimated my remaining years after this date. Then I multiply by 365, then multiply that total by 50 rounds per hour, subtract a couple of hours per day for sleeping, eating, and other non-essential time. Then multiply this by eleven (.22, .32, .380, 9mm, .38, .357 Sig, .40, .45, .223, .308).

I then estimate the same for each member of my family.

Add all these totals together and multiply by 2 to give me a little safety cushion. My wife thinks I'm past this point but I didn't tell her about the "safety cushion" factor.

Sorry I can't give the rest of my formula now 'cause UPS and FedEx are both at the door at the same time again....the neighbors hate that. Hope it's my Dillon and RCBS stuff as I've decided to try that reloading thing everyone talks about.

RKBA!

1,000 rounds good base mark for service rifle. At least half that for service pistol. 3-4x that in small game ammo.

"Much too much is never enough."

I have on hand now about three thousand round of each 9mm, 32, 38, 40, 44, 45, 357, 22, 30-30, 303, 308, 223.
I have about 500 rounds of 25acp

Thats new factory ammo.

I have about 1500 to 2000 for each of reloads/for practice.

I have been giving this a lot of thought lately. If Clinton Gore gets reelected, I would expect further severe restrictions on both guns and ammo in the next eight years. Therefore here is what I have decided. I will keep a base of at least 5,000 rounds of 22 LR. I have over 6,000 now. I will build up a base of at least 1,000 rounds of my centerfire calibers. I have over 800 rounds of 9 mm now. I will bring that up to 1,000 in the next few weeks. Then I will build up my 7.62x39 of which I have about 200 now. I also will need 32 acp for by Beretta Tomcat and 8 mm Mauser for my recently purchased vz-24.

One I know says you should have enough .22 for all your generations; and all other guns should be in military calibers so that case lots may be purchased inexpensively in quantity.

He says that he goes by the cracks in his foundation and when the cracks get too large he just starts a pile on the other side of the house to even things out a little. :)

Well... I guess he does have a formula of sorts.

I guess the question is do you want to trade in ammo later on or just keep enough for youself for defence. Because unless we get a case to the supreme court and confirm any 2nd amendment rights, we are in for major **** over the next 3-5 years. You could easily get a couple bucks a round from somebody for home defence, when ammo is banned! Of course you have pleanty of risk with this arsenal, but what the hell, it should command big bucks and excellent trading barter as well as shooting, but there is the rub, if you shoot alot when ammo is banned, either people will follow you home and steal it or they may even call the police on you, just like Hitler's boys got the sheep to call in on jews and gays. So people will squirl it away and stop shooting for recreation and of course after awhile the next generation will believe guns are immoral and you will not say the word bullet in mixed company. At some point our conventional rounds will not be the norm either, caseless or lasers will dominate. (so if your around this long it wont matter) But for now if you dont have ammo, our guns will be worth a very small fraction of their current value. Think about this, and fill 4 or 5 cubic yards with ammo in such a way as you can move it fairly fast when need be. Keep records and be able to identify a containers contents. Depressing thoughts, for sure, but you asked!
