I've noticed many stores with less of a selection of ammo due to the high demand, esp .38 caliber. It makes me wonder how much ammo everyone keeps on hand.

I usually keep on hand:

1000 rds .40 S&W
1000 rds .45 ACP
1000 rds 7.62x39
200 rds .338 Win Mag.

Whenever I go to Walmart, I pick up a box of something.
I buy again everytime I go to the range and rotate out with the oldest stocked. That way I never deplete my stock and the stock never gets that old. Except for the big gun, I don't shoot more than about 10 rds a year out of that monster.

I started shooting mil surplus rifles ~20 years ago, and the 1st thing I learned was that cheap surplus ammo is a transitory thing! If I find a good deal on ammo that is in decent shape and shoots well in my guns I tend to buy "extra":D Most of my .308, 8mm, 7.62x 25/39/54r surplus ammo was purchased for less than $.10/round.

For commerical range ammo (.38, .357, 9mm, .40 and .45), I usually buy my cast reloads in lots of 500-1000 rounds. For SD ammo I usually have ~250 rounds/caliber.

For my shotguns...I dont think one can have enough 00 buckshot:)

I reload my own for 9mm, .45, .380 and generally shoot about 3-4 hundred rounds per week. So I always have between 500-1000 rounds handy plus self defense ammo.

Way over 10,000 more like 25,000 different calibers for various rifles/pistols accumulated.

Still need more..thinking about reloading.

1,000 rds .308...... 1,500 rds 30.06..... 500 rds .270...... 500 rds 7mm.... couple hundred rds .30 .30.........have all components here for another 1,000 rds of .308 and another 2,000 rds of .06

A bunch....for instance, just in .22 I have over 30,000 rounds.

The rest I reload.....when I reload I do 3-4,000 per caliber, that is, 9, 357, .38 & .45 ACP, and I've no need to reload at the present time. Around 20,000 bullets waiting their turn, and enough primers and powder to do them. Shotgun..... I have over 35 bags of 25 lb. shot (bought a pallet years ago) with all the supplies to load 5-6,000, limited by primers, not powder.

It's not that I'm a hoarder, but when I buy, it is just easier to buy in bulk due to distance and cost of transportation. Except for the .22's which I just bought every time I went to Wal-Mart and that has paid off in spades as the cost has just about doubled from when I started buying.

Waiting for price pullbacks in lead to stock up some more.......hope it does...................................ck

I'm encouraged to see that at least several people here have less than I do. I'm accustomed to thinking of myself as miserably under-equipped in the ammo department, with only about 2000 rounds each of several major handgun calibers and a smattering of the less common ones.

I feel better now. :)

Reload for everything except .22 LR, 7.62x39 and 7.62x54 and have > 2K for all those. Component wise, I can make at least 3K for everything else in short order.

I have enough that my supply will probably outlive me if/when the SHTF.

But I'd FAR rather that be the case than die wishing I'd bought just one more box...

All the best,
Rob

9mm- around 800 rounds; 250 of it is SD ammo, the rest, reloads.

.308 Win- about 200 rounds, all reloads.

7.62x39- around a 1000 rounds, all factory.

.45 ACP- Just a half box of WWB 230 gr. Havent started reloading for it yet. :p
