The correct answer depends on the gun.
For me, seven.
Seven rounds in seven magazines, one in the chamber, then I can throw the empty box away.

If the guns are recent manufacture and are designed for regular capacity mags instead of the Bill Ruger inspired 10 round neutered types I keep 6 per gun - 2 that are used and 4 spares. I do run rounds through the spares about once a month for grins and giggles. ALSO, I keep spare Wolff springs for all of my mags.

If they are rare/out of production firearms I keep a minumum of 10 mags with plenty of springs, too.

Remember, a semiauto without a good mag is no better than a single shot. So keep a Thompson Center Contender or the like handy, too. ;)

All you can find, afford or carry! Which ever comes first. Keeping mags in your gun case, they have an unlimited shelf life. Mags in the gunshop are sometimes subjected to gunlaw errosion.

For carry/serious social use I consider five high quality magazines to be the minimum. This does not count those you may use for practise. Not that you would carry all five at once except for unusual circumstances, but I aim for five of the highest capacity which do not extend beyond the magazine well.

SIX for my Walther - four high-caps and two 10 rounders.
FOUR for my soon to be delivered H&K.
THREE each for my Kimber .45cal and Ruger .22cal.

I certainly can't see having any less than two mags per pistol, but six is like a circus juggling act in my range bag! Maybe four-ish is optimal?!

I like at least 3 pre ban mags for each gun I own. Rifles its 5 at least. For my 31 I have 4 preban glock22 mags and 6 leo mags.

Hi Johnny,

You don't have to take all of your magazines to the range at one time!

I like to keep a few loaded with carry ammo, a few that are freshly cleaned and a few that go to the range.

At least once every two months, I shoot-off all of the carry ammo. The magazines that held the carry ammo become range magazines for the next couple of months and the clean ones are loaded with new carry ammo. The old range mags get thoroughly cleaned.

This way, all of the magazines get rotated and tested, and the carry mags are always clean.

Works for me.

generally, I pick up 4 full-cap mags in addition to the Clintonista 10 rounders which normally come with a NIB purchase...honestly, I'll buy as many full-caps as I can afford, though. You can always sell/trade with other shooters later, if you have too many, or sell the gun.
