How good are you with iron sights?

For those of you that think less of the bench shooters - I have spent plenty of time in position. In the blistering Florida heat. Even got a few LEG points (with an M1A) to prove it. I just don't have the desire to work that hard anymore.

I found out the hard way this past deer season.

I can take my Ruger Mini-30 with an Ashley ghost ring rear sight and shoot bowling pins at 50-75 yards while standing all day long at the range.

Put me in my dark blind tent at dawn, or dusk for that matter, and I can not hit a deer at 35 yards. :(
 
I may even get an air rifle to get back to the basics to I can shoot from my back porch. It's atleast a 30 minute drive from my house to the shooting range and I can make that drive every day, especially when it's getting dark so early.
