How far can you shoot accurately?

Up getting = (the third thing to go according to my 75 year old father in law:eek: :D )

Snowdog,
Cap and ball at over 100 yards sound like a blast! (no pun intended) Were you shooting from a rest or off hand? What kind of damage were the BP's rounds doing at that range to the 2X4's? Even a 1:3 at that range, considering the rudimentary (sp) sights of my brass frame 1851 Navy reproduction is pretty impressive.

I HATE PIE

I can, without a rest (never can find one when walking in woods), hit a rock the size of a pie at 156yds.

Sometimes.

If I'm lucky.

From my porch.

With one of my GP's or Redhawks.
357, 41, 44, 45.
Iron, no glass.

And Really Really good ammo (natch:-).

RAE,

While we did try some off-hand shooting, most of the attempts were limited to aimed fire while sitting at an old picnic-style bench (once we decided to actually "try" to hit our targets). I believe we ended up using a towel covered cooler as our rest if I'm not mistaken.

The damage at 120 yards was interesting. I'm not certain if the wood in which we were shooting at were pressure treated, but considering they were left over from his deck construction, I presumed it was. At point blank range, the 30 grains of FFFG Pyrodex sent the .44 Hornady Swaged RB plowing completely through the board. The splintered board was indeed impressive to behold.

However, at 120 yards these same round balls would bounce off the wood, leaving shallow craters that resembled moderately heavy blows from a ballpeen hammer.

I came to the conclusion that the horrible ballistic coefficiency of the spherical round ball took its toll within that range.
Still plenty of "ummph" left to knock them over though, providing hours of fun. ;)

Don't know about pie plates, but I can, with acceptable (40%-50%) repeatability, hit a gas cap on an old, rusted Ford pickup at 45 yards.

200 Yards, 7.5 inch Ruger BlackHawk in .44 Magnum

300 Grain wadcutter over 20 Grains of 2400.

1200 FPS at muzzle 1000 FPS at 200, Approximately.

[Safety note required for this one.]
This load is a maximum+ load and must be worked up to. It should not be used in any gun other than a Ruger or Thompson/Center in good condition.
