How far can you shoot accurately?

Shooting at a 9" pie plate from a rest, how far can you shoot and consistantly hit the plate? What revolver and loads are you using.

9.5" SRH 44 mag., 150 yards. 240gr HCSWC. 22.5 grains of 2400, heavy crimp. 2X Leupold scope. Minus scope 100 yards. By consistent I'm talking 6 out of 6.

Note: This is a fairly warm load, bordering on hot, work up to it slowly, not for little guns.

from a rest, with the right load, 200 meters would have me at 80% I think. 500meters would score a few hits for sure. Now, standing, I suck. But I shoot matches anyway :D

454 casull, 4x scope, 8" RB, 250gr LFRN over 27gr 2400 @ 1400fps, or 230gr LTC over 35gr H110 @ 1900fps, or 325gr LRNGC over 19gr 2400 @1100 fps, or 300gr LTC over 13gr Unique @ 1200, these are all very consistent loads from a bench, although each requires its own sight adjustment, mostly for windage (elevation seems to be a click difference for most).

With a S&W 25 in 45 Colt, no scope (scopes on handguns are for losers, dudes ;) ) and factory loads, I can hit the pie plate at 50 yds all the time, and about 75% of the time at 75 yds.

From a rest, the variables should be the hardware, not the shooter. If, in Bullseye terms, you have a 3" gun, it should be 3" -- and so on.

About 6 months ago I began putting paper plates on my targets, I get five on a standard IPSC target. Gives me more shots before I have to paste over. I usually use this for deliberate shooting to

I usually put my targets from 33-50' out and keep at least 90% on the plate from a variety of positions. Close to 100% when I take my time. Generally use 2-4" .38/.357 revolvers. Also use a .22 revolver for which I am trying to find a good target load.

Have not yet tried for maximum distance, I figure 50' is a good distance for now.

I don't shoot from a proper rest unless checkin out a gun or new load for accuracy.

Sitting or kneeling the pie plate dead with most anything at 100 yds. (On a good day)

I once knew a man who claimed he had shot the moon, literally. His point was no one could prove him wrong....uh huh, ok!

With a hand gun a 9" plate...dont know. At 50 yds I got a 10" gong 24 outa 25 times with my CZ 83...380. Thats all I have tried.

Shoot well

Not trying to be a wise a$$; but as far as I can see; with a
6" S&W model 686-5 .357, or a 5" S&W 629-5 "Classic" .44
magnum with custom tailored handloads in both guns.

Blackhorse-

thanks for asking.:) I am getting old fast; mostly blind,
crippled, and crazy. I can still hit an elephant in
the ass with a bass fiddle.:D (LOL)

Now, as for as shoot'in- thats another story. My 20/20
eyesight has gone 180 degress, and become hindsight.
Probably keeping six shot's in a paper plate at 100 yards
would be an adventure?

Sam can kneel?
Damn, I'm envious as all get out :D I can't do that anymore and I'm 30 years your junior. 't'aint the eyes that are the first to go , tis the knees ;) (hehe, last time I tried to kneel then stand up the Discovery channel filmed it and said it was a documentary of a bull Walrus lunging across the rocks in search of food ;))

Anywho, as to the question. I honestly can't say I know. I can only recall using a revolver with a rest only 1 time. It was an H&R convertible using some cheap brand or another of .22lr and CCI Maxi Mags at 25 yards.

For the most part, I'm guessing I'm like Dan.(The eyes are the second thing to go.) 'cept I'd use a Smith model 19 with 6" barrel and "warm" cast lead 158 gr handloads in a .38 Special case.

...I agree with what Sam said 'bout kneelin'...ESPECIALLY the part about gettin' up!!! LMAO!!! In all seriousness, my local range only goes to 100 meters...about 110 yards...from a REST, using open sights, I believe I'd go 4 or 5 out of six on the paper plate at "Max distance" with any of my six-inch Smith's...put the 2x Leupold on, sighted-in at that distance and, FROM A REST, there'd be NO EXCUSES for a miss...my two cents' worth, anyway....mikey357

revolvers and pie plates....

Paper plates are pretty big targets.
If I can't do 5 out of 6 at 75 yards, something's wrong.
On a good day 5 for 6 at 100 yards.
I never seem to hit 6 for 6, no matter what gun I use, or how close I get.
On most of the good days, I'm shooting a .41 mag 8" smith N frame, or a ruger blackhawk 4 3/4" .41 mag.
With a combat handgun, (and it's stock sights) 5 out of 6 at 50 yards will be an average day for me.

I've never bothered with long range target shooting from any of my center-fire handguns, but I did have the rare occasion to join in with one of my more eccentric friends while popping off a few rounds from our cap and ball revolvers.

We found ourselves shooting at 3' sections of propped-up scrap 2x4s at a range of roughly 125 yards. Though we didn't accomplish any real level of consistency, I was thoroughly amazed at how many hits we achieved. I would venture to say we had an estimated hit/miss ratio of 1:3 .

The revolver I used was my Pietta made .44 caliber steel framed 1858 Remington using .454 caliber Hornady RB over 30 grains of Pyrodex Pistol FFFG. I'm not sure what make or load my partner was using, but Im quite certain it was a .44 caliber brass frame 1851 Colt replica. Though my hits were meted out with more authority, both of us seemed to have the same success in connecting the targets.
