How does one go about selling a hand gun

Legally, on an in-state cash transaction, you are REQUIRED to check their ID and confirm residence within your state.
It IS true that as a private seller you must not have any reason to believe that the buyer is not a qualified buyer/owner for the gun, but to my knowledge a private seller has no legal burden to take steps to verify that the buyer is qualified.

In other words, if the buyer were to volunteer that he lives in another state the law says you would be legally obligated to terminate the sale but it doesn't require that you ask him where he's from.

Just to be clear I think it's prudent to ask to see an ID, but I don't believe you are legally required to do so.

In my state, unless you have reason to believe the person is prohibited from receiving your firearm (out of state, mental patient, drug addict, etc), there is no reason why you cannot legally sell them the firearm. You certainly don't have to do a background check, NICS, etc.

I generally walk into my work on Mondays and loudly announce the list of guns I need to get rid of and guns I'm interested in buying. Works pretty well for me. Then again work for me is ROTC so you might not have as much luck.

he prices there are far above average, and their staff is not rude, but they ignore you

I never had that problem other them there gun smithing prices were through the roof
I got a p95 there for 329 plus tax and have never had an issue unless they were that busy and even then they always made it point to at least say hi to people and let them know it would be a few min before they could get to you.
and if all else fails drive to cabelas and touch everything there before you buy else where
