How do you fix the target in a 100yds range?

^^^ YES Cardboard is the necessary backstop for paper targets if the shooter wants round bullets to make round holes in the paper target so he/she can evaluate the accuracy of the particular cartridge, whether factory or handload.

Usually you staple it to the target backer, such as pieces of fanfold insulation. I've also seen where the target holder is chicken wire stapled to wooden stakes, you attach the target to that with clothes pins.

The latter is not nearly as effective, the wind can easily blow the target out of the clothes pins.

At the range I go to, the range provides and mounts the cardboard onto the target frame and the shooters staple the paper target on the cardboard. I carry a staple gun in my range bag and a bit of tape, too. Ran out of staples once. I just hate being dependent upon the range staple gun.

I use this:

(just don't shoot low  )

The problem with that is that if you are trying to shoot tight groups from a rifle, you can get tears instead of nice clean holes.

I have been shooting for years without tearing targets printed on plain paper, out to 100yrds and hitting them with everything from 22s to 45-70 and 50 caliber ball, if you are worried about tearing, use 3 strips of tape. I use 2in wide blue low tack, run vertically, with about 4 inches between strips, I can fit 2 targets in my frame.
