How do you answer the door?

Again, I don't understand why anyone would answer the door if the hour is late and you are not expecting company. Anyone with legitimate business can/should call first. There's just no reason I can think of to open your door to a stranger at night.

Well, it just might be a person truly in need, or maybe there are flames shooting up from my roof.

I would probably open an upstairs window and holler down to them if we were in bed already.

The one time I answered pounding at the front door at midnight, it was the police checking on our welfare due to an unusual situation. The dispatcher had called us, but we'd completely slept through it. I verified who it was (uniforms and two appropriately marked cruisers) before opening the door.

We don't. Our friends know to call first. No call, no entry.

The last time we opened the door was 1983. I looked out the window and the yard was full of uniformed cops. As soon as the door was unlocked the body-slammed it into my bare feet. The safety chain held long enough for me to reach for my shotgun, and we had an armed standoff until someone eventually drove up with a warrant. For a residence down the street.
