How discreet are handgun enthusiasts?

I have "shooting" listed as one of my Facebook hobbies. My page is private, and only people I know can see it.

I would not, however, post an inventory list or pictures of guns I own on a social networking site.

I only talk about it when someone else mentions guns. Like a co worker saying he is getting a handgun purchase permit and going to take a ccw course. I don't start gun conversations when I know others don't give a crap about guns.

Rifleman,

I have NOTHING to hide! My record and background is SPOTLESS! No criminal
record, no abuse, no mental health issues. NEVER even got a moving violation
ticket in my life!

I am just asking a simple question, plus im in NJ!

nodule,
I don't think rifleman meant you personally have something to hide. I think what he meant was us gun owners should not have to hide our pro gun views. He feels he should be able to be open about the subject and not have to hide it. Maybe I shouldn't speak for him but that's how I read his post.

Hey Guys,

New to this forum. I might be having a conversation with someone I just met and the topic of hobbies will come up. I will then mention target shooting. Sometimes I get a suprised look and sometimes curious type of questions. I just eguate my hobby with golf, which most people see as a friendly sport. I will say, "don't you go to the range to practice", isn't the goal to put the ball in the hole over and over". Most people don't seem to mind when I explain it that way. I just try and relate something they are familar with with something they are not.

All my friends know that I'm a gun nut I tend to talk a lot about them.

All of my friends know I'm a nut! Oh wait my personal level of sanity was not the question today:rolleyes:. On a serious note, I live in the south and hunting and fishing is a way of life for many, yet I live in a college town that is proud of it's liberal leanings. So I don't walk up to folks and say hi I'm, fill in name, and I'm a gun owner, but I refuse to hide the fact that I have enjoyed the shooting sports for more than 40 years.

Socially, I am well-known as a nut both in the workplace and in groups of friends. There is little to no stigma in Wyoming.

In the classroom is a different story. Not a single teacher knows my views on the issue, and I do not rise to attack absurd statements about gun owners.

Why? Because the post-secondary classroom is very much left-leaning. That's no mystery to anyone, but after four years I can confirm that a hard left-slant exists even in Wyoming, which was recently identified as the most conservative state in the Union (based on individuals who identified as conservative).

I am not willing to risk my high grades when I'm never going to change minds in a room where I'm outnumbered ten to one. Instead, I persuade anti-gun individuals one-to-one, in respectful, non=-adversarial conversation.

To this point, I have converted about six friends and colleagues. :)

my thoughta

I carry daily, I am careful not flash it when I am out and about. My friends know I like to shoot and own several guns. I don't tell people I am carrying. It's not the busness.

What is this "Face Book" of which you speak?

Are you referring to one of those so-called "social networking" sites on which you put your whole life on view for anyone with moderate hacking skills to use as a lever to learn everything about you?

You gotta be kidding. Why not just post an advertisement in the classifieds of your local paper: "My name is John Doe. I have guns for you to steal. Please don't come when I'm trying to sleep."
