How are you supposed to buy a gun in California?????

Iv'e finally decided which pistol to get, and now I can't get it!

I'd like to buy it out of state (Florida) because the prices I've seen here in Cali add up to about an additional 40%.

I went to a California dealer to ask about a FFL, and he said he was going to charge me $80 for the privilege PLUS California Sales tax! The whole thing sounds shady (gouging). All thy're doing is accepting a firearm, how do they know how much I paid for it?

This particular shop seems REALLY over-priced. Not to mention, they gave me a much more expensive quote over the phone then they actually charged ($80 over the M.S.R.P!) Sure, they can tell me whatever they want over the phone, but come on! Let's be adults! I suddenly feel like I'm getting the 'Manager's Special' on a used car! The real bummer is that I'm pretty sure these guys have the best in stock selection in the City of Los Angeles.

I'd bite the bullet, but since there are so few places to buy the Sig I want in Los Angeles, I really feel like I'd have 'sucker' stamped on my forehead if I paid these prices.

My question is, I have a good shop in Florida that wants my business. How do I get that gun here to California?

BTW: As I write this, the local news had a story about a guy who shot up a kid's birthday party, leaving three dead. I wonder what FFL he used?

MOVE THE HELL OUT OF THAT STATE!! before it's too late and the hollywierd freaks get ya brain washed..........:D :D

I believe you can get your own FFL for less than that.

I'm pretty sure that the LA area must have more than one gun shop - call around and ask what their fees are for accepting a transfer. Perhaps the one you consulted doesn't like doing transfers, and the $80 fee is their way of telling you that.

Dex,
Go see him latter when he's havin' his "going out of business sale!" It should be very soon!
Get on the phone!
...and thanks to those keeping up the myths about this state. Just more peace ,quiet, beauty, recreation and $$$ for the poor folks left behind!:D
I hate it when that happens!

Here in Texas my FFL transfer guy does it for 10.00 per visit not per firearm. :D

All I have to do is let him know where to mail or fax the FFL to.

I would check Gun Brokers listing.....thats how I found my guy.

I truely feel for you being in Kali, but I do find it a bit humorous that you would go to a shop that has the gun you want, but not at the price you want, and ask them to bring one in for you at a lower price. They just transfered their profit to the "import" fee.
As for the suggestion on getting your own FFL. I understand that the FFL01's are now $200-$300 plus all kinds of rules (zoning, storage, posted business hours when open to the public, etc.) You can get a FFL03 (C&R) for $30 and none of the rules listed above, but you won't be able to buy a Sig with it.

If you want to drive to Riverside use Bright Spot Pawn. He will send his ffl to the shop in Florida. You then order the gun and have it shipped to Bright Spot. Bright Spot will charge you a flat $45, no tax. Make sure the handgun is on the safe list first or it won't be transferable. Mark

Here in Idaho I pay the local pawn shop $5 to receive a gun for me, no tax. Having done time in Kalifornia, I wouldn't bother trying to get an FFL. About 15 years I had a friend who had one, they made it very difficult to keep it active. He eventually had to give it up because of local requirements.

I looked into this too. I live in Kali. In addition to an FFL, in order to be able to "sell" the gun to your own inventory, you have to have DOJ certs + any local business licenses that allow you to sell guns in the county and city. Many cities WILL NOT allow gun sales from a residential address. You need a physical store front.

So, this is 4+ certs and probably many hundreds of dollars. Plus you must be ready for federal, state, county and city "inspections". Read in this forum what happened to folks that made paperwork or inventory mistakes... they went to jail. There is no real way to save a few bucks if you live here.

Importation of firearms from other states is a BIG no-no. I just gave up and paid the higher prices so I don't have to woory about legal entanglements

What makes you think that you will be forever immune to what is happening in California?

You post this in every thread, it seems. I'm certain with some of the rules, I'll get a ban for this but, I'm posting anway.

The comment was not directed at me, but I'm going to comment anyway. What makes me think I'll be forever immune? I live in a state that understands the rights afforded me via the constitution, and isn't trying to erode my rights in the name of "safety"

If you believe that what happens in california is slowly going to overtake the rest of the country, what are YOU as a citizen(at least, I believe you are) of california doing to inform your elected officials that you do not like the way things are going? Or are you simply posting the same drivel online everytime this comes up, as it appears?

Change begins at home, or in this case, the home state.

Not an option
If moving to a free state is not an option, I guess your only other alternative is to bend over and take it.

If you ever get tired of squealing like a pig, there are 32 states rated "D" of "F" by The Brady campaign:barf: ("B" or "A" for our purposes). Check out their website and take your pick of one of the 32.

By the way, does Sarah Brady look like a worn-out drag queen to anyone else??:D

I am also a resident of California, and the LA area. I went through kind of the same thing when I went to Turners. They had beat-up SKS's for sale at around $199 and when I went to check them out but they were all gone. I asked the counter jockey what they would require to do a transfer from a supplier from out of state. It was something like $50 plus the $30 background check/dealer fee. He asked why I wanted to do that since they will be getting in another shipment "next week". I explained that I can get an unissed one for around $150. It kind of PO'ed him but what the heck.

My advice is to either pay what the gun shops around here charge for their stock or pay whatever fees they ask when buying out of state.
