how accurate is a round ball ?

It would be if I had stopped at three shots. You see those three shots were in a row on purpose. Shots 4,5 were in the black bull. The match is 10 shots in 30 min. relay. I was getting tired. I am 73.
 
We shoot a lot of long distance off hand with PRB at steel , accuracy is all about knowing your rifle, working a proper load and practicing .
As far as smoothbores go. I personally know dedicated smoothbore shooters who regularly hold their own with rifle shooters out to around 100 yards when shooting steel 10 X 10 targets , off hand . Now paper from a bench at distance is a different story but it still comes down to knowing your rifle , its proper load and practice .

Here are a couple targets shot off hand with a 54 cal flintlock , 42 inch Iron barrel . 80 grains 3 F. . 530 ball , .015 ticking patch with spit as a lube
