As far as powder burn evidence is concerned, with handloads it's a real two-edged sword. If it's not reliable enough to clear you, it's not reliable enough to hang you, either.
There's a lot of speculation and opinion on the use of handloads in defensive situations. I've concluded that the use of handloads MAY influence the outcome of one's criminal or civil trial. IMHO the chance of a handload becoming an issue is very, very low if it's a "good" shoot justified under the local deadly force statutes . . . but given the quality of good factory ammo today, why give opposing counsel even a hypothetical one percent advantage?
I only carry premium quality factory loads.
