Hot Dog / Bun Dilemna

Where I live, they sell boxes of clays in stacks of 90, and boxes of shells in boxes of 25.

I always buy 3 boxes of shells per 1 box of clays, cause clays break, and sometimes you dont shoot cause the clay was unhittable i.e. you took too long shooting the first clay, and the second already hit the ground before you could shoot at it, or sometimes the clay breaks coming out of the launcher.

or do you buy 90 clays and 100 rounds and go home with extra shells?

cause when I go with me and 1 other person, we always have clays left over and we give it to the shooters around us.

when i went with my other friends, we had way too many shells left over and not enough clays.

what do yall do?

Personally, I go to the club where they worry about the clays - I just need to worry if I brought enough money for the targets I want to shoot - I ALWAYS bring extra ammunition - you never know when a few extra might be necessary - easier to bring a few home than be in the middle and run short

Typical gyp like the 13 oz "pound" of coffee.

The standard box of targets used by a trap or skeet range contains 135 targets for five shooters in a squad to shoot one round of 25 birds; plus 10 to allow for breakage in transit or off the machine.

If you are going to buy the short count boxes for use on a portable trap, just save up the leftovers and shoot them up next time.

I could get banned for my preferred answer to this:D so....... I don't buy shells on site, I always have a case of #8, and if winter, a case of steel #2. I was a Boy Scout, "Be Prepared."

The clubs I shoot at - have their own inventory of clay targets ...and that's why we pay $ 4.50 - $ 6.50 for a round of 25 targets ....(plus the cost of your shells of course ).

If I were going somewhere and using portable machines / I would make sure I have 4 or 5 extra cases of targets with me ...( 135 to a case, I think is pretty standard ).

I always have at least 100 or more shells / more than I intend to shoot that day (for the gague I'm shooting that day - and usually a back up gun) ....(just in case). My club is about 50 miles one way from where I live / and I don't want to get all the way out there / break a firing pin or something silly and be done for the day ....(although I've never had a gun fail at a club either).

My club supplies the clay targets, a round of skeet is $2.50 for members, $3.00 for guests, bring your own shells.
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

WOW, everywhere else I have been or lived, current prices are more into the $6-$9/round range.I haven't seen $3 for trap or skeet in 15 years

ok all this time i was talking about the gun range i go to has self serve launchers. the kind you wind up, put 2 clays on, and pull the string

the shotgun club by me charges $25 for a 50 sporting clay course for non members, $18 for members

also, if a "round" of clays is 25 clays, then that box of 90 i get for 7.99 retail, comes out to $2.22 for 25 clays. so your club must be charging you cost + like, a dollar. of course, i bet you're paying a membership fee.

I buy the package with 8 "bun length" hot dogs instead of 10 regular ones. Of course, we had brats on buns last night and messed up the whole system.

If other people are shooting in the hand-trap area, I go home with a few extra shells. If not, I walk out and scrounge up a stack of clays that didn't break on impact. Extras are left on the table.

Sounds like you might like that sporting option, especially at the member rates - more diversification of targets and more challenge

Yep, and yep.

At $2.50 a round for skeet, the non-skeet shooting members of the club are subsidizing the skeet shooting members for the cost of targets and maintenance. Skeet Skeet Skeet seems to be the current focus of the club, and it has caused some griping and discontent.

It's $175.00 to join, and $100.00 per year thereafter. We have two skeet fields, with automatic high and low houses, one field also has a trap house.

We also have a 225yd rifle range, which can be stretched to 300yds if you don't mind the walk, and a fifty yard pistol range with steels.

All in all, a crazy good deal.

Here's the real story:

Typically, clay targets are delivered to gun clubs on pallets of boxes of 135 targets/box. In the box there are 9 stacks of 15 targets each (9 x 15 = 135). In usual club operations, there are squads of five members shooting 25 targets each. That's 125 targets per squad-round with 10 extra targets to allow for shrinkage (broken targets). There was a time if you wanted targets for corn field shooting you bought them in the standard boxes of 135, just like the shooting ranges.

With weight control and re-defined consumer packaging, the 90 target carton evolved. Why 90?… the boxes were simply reduced from 15 to 10 targets per stack (9 x 10 = 90).

go to walmart and buy a pack of 100 rds. then while you're still in walmart go buy a box of clays. go to the range and shoot 1 round per 1 clay. end of the day you have some extra rounds which is always good to stockpile. i know walmart runs out of them all the time. gun clubs are gay

You know not everyone lives out in the boondocks where they just shoot on their own land. It is a luxury that some foresake for things like easy access to hospitals, schools, businesses and other modern conviences (like a power grid and sewage system.) :p

Some people enjoy getting together with others and participating in a shared hobby, too.

That said, I am not a member of a gun club. I shoot mostly at an indoor range because where I live we only have about 3 months (total for the year) of enjoyable weather. Also, the local club is a little pricey IMHO for it's membership fees.

RGR3 says 'gun clubs are gay'....... :o for the rest of the community on here...

I could care less about who is gay ..../or who isn't... grow up man...its 2010..
