Hornady Critical Defense ... What happened here?

It is pretty odd that quality control issues are so prevalent in Hornady Critical Defense when I have never even heard of issues with Hornady TAP. Different production lines?

I really like the stuff but it seems like its been spotty in terms of qc. Ive not been carrying it anymore. Switched to various other standard hp's.

I haven't had any issues in it for the 10mm. Only shot about 40 rounds though and I just collected the brass I could find, didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

I feed my carry pieces Gold Dots, and haven't had any issue with them. Of course that doesn't make it the greatest ever, but it goes bang everytime I ask it to at this point.

Honestly outside of my own issue with thumb position on Glocks, (which I don't have with the G20SF for some reason) I can't think of anything I have had an issue with when it comes to shooting pistols.

Rifle I have had issue with Federal Premium 160 gr nosler partions in 7mm Mag. It was a seating issue in that the bullet was a little to far out of the case, they shot more accurate from my experience. The problem however was if you put a round in and closed the bolt then decided you didn't want to shoot it, the bullet stayed in the chamber as the case came out spilling powder everywhere. Then you had to knock the bullet out with a rod.

I keep hearing about bad CD ammo.

I had a chance to test out some of their .380 ammo in a friend's LCP. Six rounds failed to fire out of the 25 we tried. We loaded the six rounds in to a Bersa Thunder and they still failed to fire. It wasn't an issue with the LCP.

I thought the reports might have been internet myth. Now I know that they are true. I was thinking of buying some for my 9mm. I'll skip now.

I've only gone through about 35 rounds of the CD 38 special standard pressure so far in my S&W model 36, but have had no issues whatsoever. It went bang every time, had decent accuracy extracted easily every time, and none of the brass or primers have any signs of over/under pressure. All of my ammo was bought winthin the past four months so maybe some of you still got older batches from before the kinks were worked out, or maybe I've just been lucky.

I really don't think a major manufacturer like Hornady would have such terrible quality control on a product for this long a period of time, but with so many people having issues with it, I guess I'll have to save up enough money to test a larger amount in multiple firearms (especially at least 150-200 rounds in my model 36) to make sure it works as intended.

There should not be enough room for the primer to come that far out. Has this revolver been modified for moon clips per chance?

I have shot CD rounds in my PK380, SP2022, 92FS, XDm 9mm, and SA Milspec. Zero failure and very accurate.

I also use their Custom Ammo and TAP. No problems with any of those either.

I was not aware so many people had problems with Hornady CD. I hope Hornady has fixed the problem.

Ive never had any problems with CD regular loads. Was this +p?. I stay away from the hot loads as my arsenal consists almost exclusively of older Smiths. I dont want anything to happen to my babies;):D

No problema here with my Ruger NV Montado 45 Colt.
Hit a phone book target shooting-Big ol' holes :)
Like the offering for short barreled 45 Colts as it's
only 185G for the short barrels-Would carry in my
CCW Colt Sheriff 45 3 inch as well.....The red dots
look pretty intimidating framed around those burn rings.
Not sure about semi-autos though.....

What happened here

I had something similar happen but not with primers. I was shooting Ultra-max 38 spc. 158 lswc rounds in my S&W 627 and had as least one bullet per cylinder creep forward enough to prevent cylinder from turning. I can't call them because I don't have the lot # from the original box. One the rare occasion I buy bulk ammo, I re-box the rounds in 50 round boxes. So now I will have to re crimp the remaining rounds.

I've never had the problem with it, and never seen it happen. Looks like a bad batch of ammo though, and dealer did the right thing sending it back to them.

I would doubt it did any damage to your gun.

I haven't had any primers jarring loose, but I've given up entirely on Critical Defense ammo.

I took a batch [.40 S&W] to the range with some buddies a while back and we had constant failures to feed with three or four different handguns we were shooting.

The pistols would feed everything else we shot, including our basement handloads, but at least one or two rounds per box of the CD would hang up on the ramp.

If it were just one pistol, or if the problem occurred with multiple types of ammo I'd be more skeptical, but three pistols with multiple failures using Critical Defense and zero failures using any other of the half dozen different kinds of ammo we had, indicates to me that the problem lies with Hornady, not with the pistols or the shooters.

I had the same jam going on w/one of my first revolvers...I was EXTREMELY frustrated. Coincidently, I was using the same type of ammo: 125gr hollows. CHANGE AMMO. the revolver doesn't like that ammo but my other revolvers shoot it fine. "Let it go." -Rambo (1982)

Loose primer is either a loose primer pocket or UNDER pressure. IF it was too much pressure you would see the primers flattened. With too low of pressure the primer does not expand enough, and the case is not set back against the breech face to force the primer back in.

Also Hornady specifically states that Critical Defense bullets are not designed to expand or hold together after going through a barrier as they do not believe citizens have any need for that. I guess they are thinking along the lines of Glaser and Magsafe ammo.
