Home insurance...policy gun rider.

To most to us, our 'collections' mean a great deal. To many, they mean everything, and more.

A safe, and proper insurance should be a no-brainer.

Here is an idea that some of you may find cheaper than buying your own safe(which I have seen listed in Cabelas for over 1000$....I recently built my own safe out of 1/4" steel plate (1/8" plate would probably cost less), 1x1" angle iron as a frame and 5/8"hex bolts with a "doubler" plate welded on the door around the heads of the hex bolts so they couldnt be sawn through with a hacksaw . Im not sure how much it weighs, but it takes 4 strong people to lift it. Its somewhat fireproof, and best of all, it cost me less than 250.00 to build ( I cant count labor because Im the welder of the business I run)and you can have it custom built to the deminsions you want!
My safe is 6 foot tall x 4 foot wide x 2 1/2 foot deep.I went to a local carpet store and was given some carpet in decent shape that was removed from a home they had redone, and glued it inside to prevent scratches and such. I added a shelf in the upper area to hold pistols and the like, and I also keep my reloading powder stored in it.
Try looking in the yellow pages for fabrication shops and such, most would give a free estimate if you drew a sketch with your deminsions in it, and it would probably cost less than a store bought safe. If your close enough to my area to pick it up yourself, email me and I will build one for you, any size, for 200.00+ cost of materials.
Just a thought for anyone thinking of purchasing a safe... thanks,Cuz

Your best insurance policy is a quality gun safe. Keep it out of sight where casual visitors can't see it. Don't tell strangers what you own and get a good alarm system. I am a LEO and you would be amazed at how many victims we deal with that don't have any serial numbers or discriptions on their guns or other personal property. Write those serial numbers down and store them in a safety deposit box or other secure area. Do it now before it slips your mind. We find stolen guns all the time and if they are entered into the NCIC machine,(you have to have a serial number to enter them into NCIC) we get the guns back to their owners. If we do not have a serial number to enter into the NCIC your gun can be found but who knows if it is even stolen. We have to let that person go on their way with a gun (your gun) that we have run through the machine, but comes back 10-29 negative (not stolen). When we get our hands on a gun we run them all through NCIC to check for stolen. If its stolen, the person who is in posession of it is charged with recieving stolen property and the guns goes back to the rightful owner...7th Fleet

Those of you put off by the high cost of a good safe should consider financing. I recently had to get a Home Equity loan to do repairs on my house and included funds for the purchase of a safe. Considering that a safe is pretty durable and will probably last your lifetime it is a good investment. It is also usefull for protecting things like documents, cameras, jewelry and other small valuables. I also put backup discs for my computer in there. Should be easy to convince your better half to buy one considering it has use beyond storing your guns. In my opinion it makes more sense than an alarm system.

Libertarian.. interesting to hear about your experiences with USAA. They screwed me really good when I lost a vehicle several years ago.
They were a good company at one time.

K80Geoff...You should have layered security. I have worked home burglarys where a premium safe was opened like a sardine can. The thugs can get in your house and at their leisure, use the tools found on site in a lot of cases, to get into your safe. It happens. The poor victim in the case, I am refering to, had $25000.00 dollars in losses. We have recovered a few of his guns, but the majority are still missing and this burglary happened about six years ago. A safe will stop the casual nonprofessional thief, but when it comes to the pros, you need all of the security that you can afford. Its a case of better SAFE than sorry, no pun intended... 7th Fleet

CUZ: I have also occasionally seen adverts for safe DOORS, with the surrounding frame, for substantially less than a full safe. They can be welded into a metal box, or cast in place into a concrete one. I'm giving very serious consideration to building a concrete gun safe/tornado shelter in my basement, with one of these doors and steel re-enforced concrete.
