Home defense outside of firearms

+1 for loud/alert dogs that are not vicious...both are BIG dogs with enough bark to scare most people that hear them/see their behavior while in alert mode. I just want the advanced notice that I have an interloper, and will deal with them based on where they are and how many of my kids are home at the time (SA/tactics).

Also have my garage windows secured with locking grates and an alarm on the house.

Some features just don't matter when you live in a rural location. Lighting and landscaping really doesn't help with a cluster of houses on 5-20 acres each out in "the sticks" (minimum 45 min. LEO response time when 911 is called from 9pm till 7am).

I'm currently designing a new home for a piece of more "defensible" property I just purchased (a little less rural, but on the top of a local mtn ridge). Looking at cost differences for things like lexan for sliding patio doors and any large "bay" windows or interior metal shutters...metal framed SOLID doors...better wall construction...an underground "entertaining and storage area" with vault door access...etc.

Always seeking more ideas to incorporate.

I have to say that my dog, though he's a scrawny little guy of only 27 lbs that couldn't really hurt you, will defend "our pack" with his life as far as I can tell.

If my wife or I invite you in, you're in. And if we don't, then you're an enemy in his mind. And he'll bark his head off.

I do nothing to discourage this behavior. You can't get in my house unannounced.

A study by, I think, the Police Institute revealed that the single best protection one can have is to live in a neighborhood where everyone knows each other and watches each other's homes. My neighbors let each other know when they'll be out of town, or when we'll have workmen in when we're out. Of course all the other things mentioned- motion lights, cameras, etc., are also excellent ideas.

I'm also lucky enough to live in a small (6,000) suburb of Detroit where the police will regularly check your house while on patrol if you tell them you'll be out of town.

The really good thieves will steal the dog too.

Yeah, and I'll be vengeful. He might bite. I'll bite with a lawyer if I find you. And I'll bite you and your brother and your mother and your cousins if you mess with my dog.

Of course I might not find you. I don't discount that reality. But I'll be just as loyal to the little guy as he is to me. I don't consider him disposable.
