Home Defense Handgun--Best features and examples??

Reliability,
Portability,
Accuracy
Effective caliber and firepower
Safety features for other family members
Decent control by several family members
Utility in the Dark of night

What guns can do this the best??

My 20" remington 870 fits the bill.

I agree with drjjpdc and my handguns are locked away when I'm home.

If I had to use a handgun for home defense it would be my 9mm Sig 226 or XD45ACP, either loaded with Golden Sabers.
