Home Defense Ammo

I like Speer Gold Dot's. It is fine quality ammo and you can often find the .40 S&W in 50 round "law enforcment" boxes for around $30-35 per box of 50. Good AND Cheap.

Richard NMI Marcinko: MagSafe, SWAT loads....

I disagree with the one recent post.
Many spec ops & SWAT units nationwide use frangible or "special purpose" ammunition. TAP means Tactical Application Police.
In a few of his 1990s era Rogue Warrior books, Richard Marcinko, the founder & CO of the US Navy's SEAL-Six or DevGru(Development Group) wrote how they used the HK USP .45acp with MagSafe rounds. ;)

You do not want Glasers in your HD gun. I have shot a lot of Glaser type slugs and they tend to fold in on themselves going through construction materials and penetrate well. It is only in soft material that it will frag (or something rock hard)

Don't count on Glasers to keep your loved ones safe. If any round is really safe for the family, then it'll be safe for a perp too. Stick with standard heavy bullets and practice a lot. That will do a lot more towards keeping the family safe and still dangerous for perps.

Low penetration and a self defense load should not be in the same sentence. Tactics, training and pre-planning are what will keep your family safe. If you want to shoot birdshot, which is what Glaser's essentially are when they break up, shoot it from a shotgun not a handgun. Still not a great self defense option but still better than using frangible ammunition.
