Hog hunting question.

Catfish You must not hunt . If you did you might know what a hardcast 180gr or hardcast 300 gr does to a hog. it will go threw front to rear and exit and brake everthing along the way or take out both shoulders and keep going. You must not have read the opening tread well. The guy has a 6.8mm also to go with the .223. Know if you take the 223 and not the 6.8 for hogs that just shows you don't hunt hogs or have never had one bust out of brush real close. I used a 357 in my younger and dumber days and killed many hog. Today i would use my 44 or a 308 . I do have a 223 and will not take it to the woods for hog unless thats the only rifle i owned. North east florida A man saw tracks and stoped his truck, got out to let his dogs out. Just opened the cage when a hog ran out from the shoulder of the road and cut his leg and the major vien in it. One dog was killed and one hurt man died and hog was later tracked and killed. He never had time to pull a pistol he had. This was in a woods and water some 12 or 13 years ago. Those younger guys there still hunt with knives , just catch and cut the males to hunt again. Young and dumb. Till you have a 250 lber or larger pig run right by you and try to hook you as it runs by you just won't understand have'n enough gun. Nothing wrong with a well placed shoot from a 223 but IF you have something bigger?

Double Naught Spy Nice piggy there . How big ,200 + Your right about the hogs being defensive . The older hogs are about as sharp as a buck just can't see for poop. Moved to NC mountians and NO hogs around, atleast not free rangeing. Miss hunt'n and cook'n them. gona go back to fl and get a couple this winter

No he doesn't.

I stated I don't hog hunt but it is very popular around here. I'm a deer hunter.

My point was that in the Nueces Helicopter Hog Hunting video you can see the effects of the "premium .223 ammo" that the OP mentions, in action.

I guess hunting from a chopper is a bit safer than walking next to brush where a hog could be. Oh remember ,,i have a friend that will use a 22 hornet for hogs but not walk'n around so i know it will work ,just not the best choice for some types of hunting. Have'n 30 rounds, Big deal if one of those piggies is on your rear end and your try'n to find a tree to scurry up or stump to circle. That first shot is what counts. Unless your in a chopper. I also bow hunted for hogs years ago, stalking, and they work well on hogs to. That first shot maybe all you get. Oh the knives are typicaly used with dogs. but so are handguns, 22's and guys that are just going to cut them and release.

The .223 works just fine and the xm193 loading works very well inside 150 yds. or so.

Indeed it does. I've killed dozens of hogs with that round. Some of those hogs went over 300 pounds. They were killed with my CZ 527 and AR-15 rifles. It is important that shots on hogs be limited to about 150 yards when using that round.

When a hog is shot low behind the shoulder, the M193 bullet penetrates about 6", yaws 90 degrees and fragments: The fragments shred the heart, lungs and often the diaphragm. The hog usually bang flops or goes only a few yards.

For the sure fire way to kill one, you grab his back legs and lift. Once off the ground, a simple twist motion while pushing and/or pulling puts all but the largest unit on his side. Then you jump on him and stick him right in the heart with a Buck 110 folder. No need to spend money on ammo to sight in etc...
