HK TACTICAL or 1911

I've been saving for a 1911, but saw a new HK Tactical that looked good to me.With a price tag of 900 bucks what do you who may have these guns think is the right choice.I'm not looking to use it as a carry gun, just for fun at the range.

Everyone in coming out with a .45 single Stack that's "Almost as thin as a 1911!"

Why not get a 1911? Simple, effective, and time proven.

The HK Tactical is the only box stock .45
I know of which will handle .45 super and
says so in the users manual. No spring
upgrade required. Glock 21 won't do that.
I am very tempted to get one.

I own a 1911, a HK USP45F, and a HK MK23 SOCOM. With that being said, go for the Tactical, you wont be disappointed. The tactical is a terriffic weapon that will not fail you when you need it most and will never choke on you if you use decent ammo.

Evan

AMIGO,

Nine hundred greenbacks seems too expensive for just a range plinker!

I love H&K but if your looking for a gun that is good and well priced how bout the Ruger .45? An extra strong "Wolf" type spring is alot less than the 500 diffrence in price...(excluding taxes...)

Or if your bent on the H&K why not get the standard Civillian USP...it's plenty accurate and usually ('round here in Virginia) about 550-600 dollars...Leaves you some money to get a reloding Machine and/or ammo...Knowaddamean?

Peace

I have both the Tactical and many high-end 1911's. To answer your question, what do you plan on doing with the H&K? Home defense? Plinking? Target shooting?

For defense, I would recommend the H&K. If you want something for target shooting, get the 1911. Sweetest trigger on earth and depending on the model, very accurate.

I have a Wilson AND the H&K in my night stand. Got the tactical light mounted on the H&K too.

I can't believe no one has yet offered the obvious solution. I have a Tactical and several 1911s and both types have valuable attributes. You need at least one of each.

For range work without a trip to the gunsmith for accurizing, I'd get the Tactical first. For PD I'd get a reliable 1911 first.

Thanks to all for your replies.Still unable to decide.Guess everyone has an opinion based on their own experiences, and that's great.I gave up on 1911s a long time ago when they all rattled. Now they don't seem to be as loose, but the dependability and cost is a bit hard to take.Seems like I'm getting a burn hole in my pocket, so I'll make a choice soon.SHAKEY AND EQP, you both offer a good reason to go HK.DAVID ROBERSON, I think you have the final solution..THANKS again to all.I'll post again when I've a few 100 rounds thru my choice.

wishbone, try a Glock 21 before you buy anything.I was always a Glock hater until I shot one. Then I traded my HK for one.Best move I ever made.I feel that the G 21 was made for me,even with having relativly small hands.

WOW! I wish I had 900 bucks to blow on a range gun. However, I did purchase a USP 40C
last year, and I am fully satisfied. It's great for concealed carry, which is why I bought it. It's bigger brother, the Tactical, in .45 of course, is a beauty. That is my next purchase, if I don't get the SOCOM first. Personally, I would start out with the standard USP, to see if HK is for you. If so, sell it, and upgrade. The resale value of HK is formidable. Just something to think about.

I have a Kimber Gold Match 1911 as well as the HK USP 45 Tactical. Personally, if I was only able to keep one, it would be the HK Tactical. I've built a good size collection of handguns over the last few years. Bought the Kimber because I like the look and was brainwashed into thinking "what kind of firearms enthusiast (gun nut?) am I if I don't have a 1911. The Kimber is beautiful. Outstanding blue finish, museum grade grip panel, etc., etc., Truthfully, it's not as accurate as I had hoped. Maybe I just haven't found the best ammo for it yet. I hate cleaning it. When I reassemble it I always have a problem with either the slide release or the barrel bushing. However this could just be my inexperience. On the other hand, I LOVE THE 45 TACTICAL. I find it extremely accurate, esay to field strip, never misses a beat and shoots all ammo well. Don't kid youself. There is a big difference between the 45 Tactical and any other USP (O ring extended barrel, excellent single action trigger, fully adjustable sights, etc.) These amenities make it worth the extra cost over the regular USP. The Kimber is beautiful, but the HK 45 Tactical is the gun to get. Good luck. Sincerely, Twoichgroup52.

GOAT- I do have 4 Glocks and like them all.The 30 and 34 are my favorites, but that TACTICAL still looks good to me.TWOINCHGROUP52-You sure your not a HK sales rep.? With a recomendation like yours (from personal experience)I have made up my mind. I will get the TACTICAL next. Thanks for your input everyone.

I have an old 1911 and just got a Tactical a few weeks ago. I LOVE THIS GUN.
One of the main reasons I went for it, apart from the obvious that others have already mentioned, is that I am a Lefty.
1911's are not very lefty-friendly. The HK is very lefty-friendly. If you are a Righty then this makes no difference.
You mentioned not liking the rattle that a lot of 1911's have. The O-ring on the Tac makes for a VERY tight lockup.
The Tac can take toys more easily also
(Flash-Suppressor, UTL, Silencer if you really wanna blow some bucks)

I like my 1911, but if I had to choose, I would take the HK in a second.

Just a thought on this...for those of you chiming in about the tactical...it IS possible to start cheap and work upward, the same way you do with a 1911.

I have a catalog that will allow me to purchase ambi safety switch ($65), match barrel ($120), match trigger group ($126), etc. You can start with the normal full size variant one...and add all the rest to make it into basically a tactical. Almost all of this can be done without a gunsmith.

I personally don't need ALL the features of the tactical, and for me 1.75 " groups at 25 yards bench tested is accurate enough for what I need...no Olympic hopes here! But I like the fact that I can add some things...like the ambi safety...for left handed shooting stages, etc.

Just a thought....

Aikidoka, for the price and labor of the upgrades mentioned, you pay more then getting the Tactical first, and you don't get the snazzy case or the pinky supporting magazine extensions :p

Wishbone, 2inchgroup is right. There is a world of difference between the USP and the Tactical. I have a USPF9, and shot a friend's Tactical. I was doing .5 inch groups at 7 yards without trying. A very sweet trigger, 2nd only to my P9S, recoil felt equal or less to my USP, and the mag extension was great support.

Now, I want to get a drop in barrel for the 9 with O-rings, except it is ignored while I shoot my P7.

PV, are you saying that the mags for the USP45f are different then the USP Tactical?

I too am considering the Tactical.

Thanks,
CMOS

EQP,

I recently obtained a Mark 23. It must be an earlier one as it doesn't have the LOCK-OUT DEVICE (the label did come with it though). Besides a spare mag, did your SOCOM come with anything else like a cleaning kit?

Man, compared to the USP45, that Mark 23 is built like a tank.

Went to get the TACTICAL to-nite. They sold all 3 of them. What a bummer. I guess when you snooze you loose.I'd never think they would sell all 3 in 1 week, but they did.I know where there is a new MK23, but don't think it's the latest. It's been there for many months.Guess the word is out on how good the TACTICAL is for the money.:mad

CMOS,
The mags themselves are the same for the Tactical and USP full-size. It is the floorplate that is different. The Tactical floorplates are extended. I have one regular USP mag that I've been using as-is until I get an extended floorplate for it. It works just fine. The Tactical mags (meaning the extended plate) look cool and are very comfortable, esp if you have big hands.
