get your pinatas and sombreros out and ready, our new national holiday is coming may 5th! in all seriousness, a damn mexican holiday is becoming as big in America as the 4th of july. it really makes me want to :barf:

It's also very big with the Cuban population in South Florida....who can be credited with having actually built this state's current economy and are prime movers in maintaining our relative freedom.

Makes me wanna dance! ;)

Exactly. Next thing you know, a damn Irish holiday will become almost as big (St. Patrick's day) where IT IS THEIR STATED INTENTION that EVERYONE become Irish!

Thanks for the observations Lucibella and Overman.
And so what about Cinco De Mayo?, no effective difference between it and St. Paddys day, Columbus day, Oktoberfest, Juneteenth or etc. To some degree all share a common origin insofar as these express some unique experience of the groups to which they are related; and now have become largely community holidays.

And anyway Cinco de Mayo tends to be almost more popular in the US, in Mexico the day which holds a much deeper importance is September 16th. So in some ways, especially in how its viewed here, it's not a "damn Mexican Holiday".

American's do tend to make other holidays and traditions their own...nothing new there...

Most Americans just use it as an excuse to drink. I don't see nothing wrong with that. Just don't give me any Corona

"Most Americans just use it as an excuse to drink. I don't see nothing wrong with that. Just don't give me any Corona"

most Americans i know couldnt give a hoot about a mexican holiday, now st. patricks day, that is an excuse to drink for sure.

cinco de mayo only took off as a result of the estimated 12 million ILLEGAL immigrants from mexico who are now residing in the U.S.A. if they want to fly mexican flags and celebrate mexican holidays they need to reside in mexico. what would happen if a bunch of Americans went to mexico and had a 4th of july parade? they would be lucky to get out of there alive.

during a recent U.S.A. vrs mexico soccer match in mexico the over 100,000 people in attendance shouted BIN LADEN BIN LADEN in unison. yea, they really have our backs dont they?

Close but not quite

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4236314/

a few dozen fans chanted “Osama! Osama!” as the United States was eliminated by Mexico in Olympic men’s soccer qualifying.

They are the rough equivalent of Americans who think that all "them furrin muslims are out to kill us."

As for Cinco De Mayo being purely the result of illegals, that's rich. There are millions of legal hispanics in this country as well. Are they not allowed to celebrate a holiday important to them?

9mm

I am not mexican nor do I even know anyone who is. I just don't see it the way you are describing with a bunch of illegals running around in the streets hooting and hollerin. I could care less about that "holiday". All I know is that all the local bars put Coronas on special and advertise "come celebrate cinco de mayo"

Living in the southwest with a high proportion of Latinos, Hispanics and those of Mexican heritage, I see Cinco de Mayo as really a small event. There a few small celebrations scattered around. Cinco de Mayo is being marketed by the media, beer and snack food companies so we can spend money. Even in Mexico it is not that big of a holiday. Some people I know from Mexico wonder why it is such a big deal in the US. Advertising pure and simple. A lot more people I know celebrate St. Patricks day then Cinco De Mayo. Even in Mexico St. Patricks day is celebrated, probably because of the San Patricios, the Irish who fought with Mexico against the US.

Source please?

Cinco de Mayo "took off" in Miami before the Marielitos arrived. Make that about 30 years.

Exactly. It is like St Patrick's Day, Mardi Gras, Grandparents Day, Secretary's Day, ect. A way for Hallmark and ( in the case of St Paddy's day, Mardi Gras, and Cinco de Mayo) a chance for every corner pub to make some extra cash.
9mm, no one is more Pro Border Security than I am. But the Hispanic influence on our society has not been all bad. There are many legal immigrants here who give a great deal to our society. Not just in paying taxes and serving in the military (where they have certainly done their share). Also in areas of culture, food, dance, ect.
I guess what I am saying is:
Give a pat on the back to legal immigrants (Hispanic and others). But imprison or kick out those who break our laws, whether it be through the "harmless" act of mass illegal migration or through the commitment of more atrocious crimes by some of them when they get here.
Keep Cinco de Mayo. But close the border and end the open-door-free-for-all policies of Presidente Vicente Bush.
Then we can all celebrate.

Lotsa wrong answers here!

OK- Cinco De Mayo is a proper celebration in Texas because the leader of the Mexican defense against France at the battle of Puebla, was General Ignacio Zaragoza de Seguin . A NATIVE TEXAN. Just as G. Washington's birthday is celebrated on both sides of the border (more in Mexico than in Texas) as being the first leader to throw off European dominance in the new world. Similarly, Bolivar's exploits are celebrated beyond Columbia, Peru, and Bolivia.

Cinco De Mayo recognizes that a NATIVE TEXAN fought bravely and helped to destroy French colonial designs in 1862 in the new world. Hence- Cinco De Mayo, is a small celebration in and around Puebla, Mexico and La Bahia, Texas (Zargoza's hometown).

Because Corona, Tecate, and other beers are imported through Gambrinus Inc. in San Antonio, TEXAS, they seized upon an opportunity to take a small state festival and turn it into a grand marketing scheme. Now Americans go crazy over this small holiday just like St. Pats day, and they drink Mexican Beer rather than Guiness.

The real Mexican Holiday is deiz y Seis or 16 September day when they won their revolution.

We aren't celebrating a Mexican Holiday so much as a Texan one.

You know, I have far more important things in my life to worry about than what kind of holidays my neighbor celebrates, or what he calls them. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my bone.

here in denver someone always gets shot during cinco de mayo celebrations ...

... then again, someone gets shot here almost every day.

Dem dayum furniners!

Why can't they celebrate a true American holiday like St. Valentine's Day, no, wait, not that. Or, St. Patrick's Day? No, wait not that one, dayum furniners! Or, October Fest? No, not that one! Or, Pulaski Day? No, wait, not that one.

They took our jobs! Everyone back in the pile.:D

MORE history?

"... the leader of the Mexican defense against France at the battle of Puebla, was General Ignacio Zaragoza de Seguin."

Wasn't one Juan Seguin at the Alamo with his sons? Any relation? I'm guessing YES.
