Hit a Baseball?

I cheated too and only shot 100 yards today. I drilled a hole through a baseball and strung a wire through it, hung it from my 100 yard target frame then shot at it using 3 different types of 22 LR ammo out of my 10/22. I had to shoot paper first to zero for each ammo.

I used Federal Bulk 36 gr copper plated HP to begin with and shot 8 out of 10.

Next up was Remington Yellow Jacket which did better than I thought it would and got 9 out of 10.

Then I cheated a little bit and used Federal Gold Medal match ammo, 40 gr LRN and just kept hitting and hitting and hitting and I didn't stop till I went through the entire box with no misses. Actually I don't know how good I was shooting because as the ball started to come apart it got bigger and bigger but it still hung there.

Sunny, 9 mph winds from the south, I was shooting north so that worked out well. Sorry no picture, didn't think to take a camera and what was left was put in a paper bag and put in the burn barrel.

Paper groups were 3 1/2" for the Federal Valu Pak and the Remington Yellow Jackets, a tiny bit under 2" for the Federal Gold Medal.

I would have been cheating big time if I had been using my centerfire guns.

I know this thread is about baseballs, but has anyone tried the same test with tennis balls? They are between 2.5 and 2.625 inches in diameter.

I was curious and checked online and you can get 72 practice balls for about $30. Screw in a small eye-bolt and some fishing line and voila a marksman's challenge.

i can do golf balls at 300 7 or 8 out of 10. So i would have to give that one a try pete. I have 4 inch groups at 600 right now. Savage model 10 FP in 308 with awesome scope on it.

Blackjack-- Try this one. Slow, but deadly accurate
41.5 gns- Varget
CCI Bench primers
2.79 COL
Case trimmed to 2.04
2550 FPS, But man o man Accurate out of a Savage

Now there's the actual "real world" shooting I was looking for. Sounds like both of you guys are doing pretty good by any -- or at least my standards.

Old Grump, you're having better luck than I am with the Fed Bulk Pac ammo. jd

I'm gonna try it at 340 yards.

That's the longest distance at my range and take pictures.
I'll warm up at 200 and 260 first. sucks we don't have a 300 yard board.

Hopefully this Sunday or Monday it's not crowded at the range.

If I'm able to get to the 300 yard range before deer season, I'm going to try just what Grump did, drill a hole and hang it from a pole.

Keep the tests coming boys! It wasn't the point originally but it's very interesting!

Will be 2 weeks before i can get back home and shoot, hopefully this thread is still very alive by then.

Thanks for the recipe, I will give that a shot. So far I havent been able to beat the federal match stuff out of my savage, but maybe that will do the trick.
