History Channel on ATF

Did anyone see the History channel program on the ATF last night? It was on at 9 PM eastern. I saw the last 20 minutes where those retired ATF agents were telling us how they were "just doing their job". Then they covered the ATF at Waco and one of them said that "the extent of force we use will be determined by what the perpetrator or perpetrators do".

It bothered me that they were NOT bothered by enforcing laws that are in direct violation of our constitution.

The worst part is that one former agent, who teaches a college course now, said that more of his students have approached him with interest in joining ATF after the Waco incident. Here's what he said: "I guess there's no such thing as bad publicity". Nice attitude, eh?

Does anyone else here think that they may be attracting a lot more people who want to be jack-booted thugs? Does anyone think that the federal agent who respects the constitution is fast becoming a thing of the past?

Does anyone think this thread is being monitored???? :)

Started to watch the show, but the intro made me want to puke. Bunch of stuff like how the BATF enforces some of the least popular laws in the country, and how we should feel sorry for them.

Just couldn't make myself sit through it. Don't guess I missed much.

Oh, and no, I don't think there will ever be a shortage of people willing to mistreat their fellow man "for the good of the country". Most tyrants believe in what they are doing.

Nauseating, wasn't it?

I especially loathed the way that the commercials for "The Enforcers Week" lumped "ATF! DEA!" in with "Border Patrol! and the Texas Rangers!".
Just what tyrannical and unconstitutional enforcers of victimless crime statutes who operate as though the fourth amendment didn't exist, and who have destroyed the concept of property rights (which are the only real basis for stability in a society governed by reason) with their nonsensical asset-forfeiture laws, have to do with duly-constituted law enforcement agecies is beyond me.

Nazi's were just doing "Their Job" during WWII, in the death camps... Statements like that are sickening! The only difference now is that 'they', dont have to face a court that WILL convict them is 'they' are guilty as charged. Hopefully this will change VERY soon.

Disappointed in the History Channel

Well, at least they balanced it out with interviews of the surviving B.D.s telling their side of the story...oh...er...wait, I was thinking of an alternate universe.

And yeah, I actually have a lot respect for the Rangers. They seemed to be the only ones with a sense of professionalism in that whole mess. I think they've been besmirched by association.

The fact of the matter is that as long as these people breath, they will continue to assault & kill the innocent. If only I could be supreme ruler for a little while....

I saw a "60 Minutes" show a few years ago on which a BATF agent stated that the people he arrested were nicer folks than those he worked for.
Why not induct all these Ninjas into the military and let them try out their skills against real troops.
Or maybe-- they could all be mall cops!

I watched it while I was on my Helathrider - best workout I've had in a while! Typical "poor, poor us" crap, but that was pretty much what I'd expected. I wonder how many of them have read John Ross' "Unintended Consequences"?

Well, what could we expect? We have an entire federal bureau who's existance is founded on a concept (federal control of privately owned firearms) that we all loathe. Upon joining the BATF, I'm quite certain you go through several seminars on how Americans are polluted by a bunch of gun-nuts and need to be protected from themselves. And stuff like that. You're probably indoctrinated to believe in the authority you have, and that you can do no wrong. After awhile, I'm sure that that power can be addictive, and before you know it, you're an honest to God jack-booted-thug.

And then, there are probably gun nuts like us in the ATF, with one sickening side effect; they want to pack heat, and they don't care if they have to trample on other peoples' rights to do it. Guess they aren't like us after all. People like that are not only selfish, they're [EXPLETIVE DELETED].

If I'm not mistaken, the Texas Rangers did a lot of the investigation that embarassed the BATF the most at Waco. They seem to have caught wind of the bravo sierra early and, as someone said above, decided that they were professional lawmen and not obligated to cover for the likes of ATF.

Notice...

...that the Texas Rangers are a STATE agency. Most of the JBT plague is in federal law enforcement. Why is anyone's guess, though. Perhaps the Clinton/Reno years are responsbile. I couldn't say, I didn't become politically aware until the mid-90's. Before that...well, like most elementary schoolers, politics didn't concern me. :)

I think Nightcrawler is right, indoctrination.

I used to know a ATF agent through a social club that I belonged to. One time I asked him how I could get a FFL. He responded it was difficult but "go ahead and get one since it will give us more people to arrest". I was stunned! I thought to myself if he feels this way about someone he knows and who also happens to be a LEO (although I am a local LEO), how do these guys respond to the rest of the public. Needless to say it opended my eyes. The kicker was the guy was a gun nut. Can you say hypocrisy?

I seem to remember that the Texas Rangers report on the Waco incident pulled no punches, and they still maintain that if they had been in control at the scene, it would have ended peacefully. They also point out that they never received all of the evidence they subpoenaed from the FBI, including the front door of the Davidian building. The FBI logged it into evidence, and then claimed it had been lost when the rangers subpoenaed it. Is "corrupt" too strong a word? How about "vomit"?

Since our government is there to help us, in theory at least, we should use their 1800 numbers for gun advice. "Should i get #6, #7.5 or #8 birdshot for squirrels?" "Can you recommend a good powder load for my Kentucky Rifle?" "AR15 or SAR1?" "5.45x39 or 5.56x45?" "Will .50bmg help me uphold my 2nd Amendment obligation, or should i stick to Stingers and AT-4s?"

The Rangers have a reputation of near absolute honesty. To me, that is the first priority for ANY Peace Officer.

JBTs

I guess I shouldn't have been so worried about insulting anyone in my original post..

mrat, the response you got is a result of what we call "indoctrination" when it happens in communist countries.

:)

ATF was explained to have been started as a means to enforce tax code.

Nice.
Sherriff of Nottingham kinda thing huh?

I wonder how much taxes the Branch Davidians owed.
