Hi-Point 9mm Range Report

Well... never shot a Hi-Point, but when i first started shooting a friend of mine bought a Haskell (as far as i can tell the same basic gun) and it seemed to shoot fine.

At one point three of us bought Jennings J-22s because they were cheap and we shot THOUSANDS of rounds out of those little guns. They were as accurate as we were and we enjoyed the hell out of them for $69.95.

Personally, for $100-ish i would prefer to save a few more $$$ and get a nice Makarov or CZ-52, but I would not turn down a Hi-Point if someone gave me one :D. However, I did see a Hi-Point at the last gunshow in town here with a ghost ring rear sight!! I would almost be tempted to spend $100 on it just to have a chance to try out a ghost ring on a handgun cheaper than modifying any of my current pistols, and then have to pay to have them changed back if i don't like it.

I have heard good things about the little Carbines, but never had a chance to actually shoot one. Can anybody here give a range report?

My first handgun was a Hi Point 9mm compact. Once I got used to it, I could keep all my shots in the black at 25feet(which is fine with me for a home defense pistol). Almost 100 rounds through it with no hiccups whatsoever. At one time it was my "go to" gun because it was the only one that I knew was reliable(not enough roudns through my Hi Power and the 1911 was having some issues).

Based on my experience with the handgun and some examples of the 9mm carbines accuracy, I picked up a carbine almost a year ago. Let me tell you that thing is accurate as a ything I have ever shot. In the offhand position at 50 yards I can keep the group under an inch! Given the nature of the cartridge it's firing, I wouldn't depend on it's stopping power out past say 100 yards, but for the price, the Hi Point guns to me are a good buy,

Besides, if I ever need a camp gun, the Hi Point would be a good knock about pistol.

Just to let you know,my compensated 9mm came with the ghost ring sight although i've left the 3 dots on.I thought it was neat that Hi-Point gave me the choice. ? for Higgins, did your compact come with the ghost ring sight?

Hi, guys,

Again, I find something odd. The people who knock the High Point state that they have never owned one, never will own one, never fired one, or never even seen one.

I am no booster of High Point, but how in hell can you badmouth any product while taking pride in not knowing anything about it?

This seems to me to be the height of arrogance and stupidity.

Jim

I believe I have fallen into the Hi Point haters club. I have never held or fired one. Thanks for the enlightening review. I don't believe I have ever seen an uglier pistol, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have a CZ-52. Go figure on the asthetics.
I must agree, sometimes economic times, hardships or other circumstances don't allow us to just go out and buy something. I want a BHP. I will not be able to afford one for a long time. What I can afford, I have reasonable expectations of. My guns were all bought with a budget in mind, and 3 of them I would count on when tshtf.

I will say, most of the time I listen to the opinions here and on the other gun forums to narrow my variety down to a few choices.
I believe we help each other make informed decisions. So if some on the forums harp on your choice, I believe no offence is meant, just some of us have a stronger opinion than others.

I have to agree, though, I did shoot the carbine, and I was as surprised as I have ever been. Had a ball with that little gun.

I for one agree with what Mr Keenan has said. I too, am not an owner or supporter of a Hi-Point, but I find it funny that there are so many jokes about this firearm.

It seems, that the Hi-Point is truly the bastard firearm. Shakes my head, nothing wrong with owning one or shooting one.

Jim, I agree. I seem to be the only one here who hates Hi-Points... that has actually owned one!!!! Mine was a jam-o-matic POS!!!!

hi-points

which is dumber? paying less than $150.00 for a hi-point or paying $3795.00 for a clark custom meltdown special.

i betcha rob latham could take a hi-point and outshoot most of us with a clark custom meltdown special. it is the gunfighter, not the gun.

I've shot a few different hi-points thru the years and they've always seemed to work. Some were used tradeins at my friends shop that we would function test in the desert, they looked beat up but worked neverless.By the way,Hi-point states all of its firearms are rated for +P+ ammo.

Hi, Denfoote,

Your opinion and experience noted and respected. I can't help pointing out, though, that your description has been applied at various times and by various people to many guns much more expensive than the High Point.

revolvergeek. I own a Hi-Point Carbine. I bought the rifle, four mags, a case of PMC 9mm ammo for $75 and the rifle was complete with an installed laser. I am not sure what made me buy it. If I have the money, I have a hard time turning down any gun deal. Anyway, I have fired perhaps 500-1000 rounds through the rifle and was very satisfied. It is reliable, fairly accurate, and ugly. It makes a dandy plinker, and a great rifle for coyote calling. I added a shotgun scope to it complete with mount for $50 (I spotted it in a gun store and decided to see how it worked out). I rarely shoot this rifle (I know it has been sitting against the back wall of my safe for over a year), but I certainly think it is a good gun for the money. If a 9mm rifle sounds like something you would want, this one is a good buy. When I first got this rifle, I took it out near dusk and brought along a woman I was dating at the time. She asked me why anyone would want that little light on a gun. I explained that you just put the "little light" on your target and fire. Several hundred rounds later, I still couldn't get it back from her. No beer can was safe. The non existant recoil, and the almost free ammo I reload in this caliber makes it ideal for letting new shooters try out the sport for the first time.
Don't worry about these guys feeling the need to put in their two cents even though they don't know what they are talking about. It happens all the time. Just look through the BS.

Been in Michigan and just got back. I've enjoyed reading everyone's responses to my original range report.

Couple of responses: Yeah, I'd have to agree that the Hi-Point 9mm Compact is truly an ugly gun. But what it lacks in aesthetic beauty it somewhat makes up for in ergonomics. Doesn't feel or handle as horribly as its aesthetics would suggest.

As I've been out of town, haven't had a chance to run any hollow-points through it, as someone suggested. But I will and will report back - maybe this week.

TropicalZ, yeah, mine came with a ghost-ring rear sight and a little allen wrench to replace the factory rear that the gun comes with (which by the way is fully windage and elevation adjustable - go figure on a $100 gun). Haven't had the chance to use the ghost-ring, but like someone else said, I've always wanted to try a ghost-ring but didn't want to pay for it on a more expensive gun. Maybe the Hi-Point is worth the price just to try a ghost-ring sight at a cheap cost.

Jim,
I own a lot of guns. It's hard to keep track of them sometimes!!!:D I got stuff I haven't fired in years. Stuff I've gotten rid of, like the Hi-Point, for various reasons. My experience with the High Point is at least 20 years old. I remember it jamming so badly that I buried it out on the desert in disgust!!! I also remember trying to make it work. Changing mags etc... I also remember taking it back to the dealer and trying to return it, and being told that because I bought it on sale, there were no returns!!!!! It was a bad experience all around. :( I liked the gun. I would not have bought it if I didn't, but I was young and am much wiser now!!! ;)

Except for a certain Taurus PT145 I know of...
