So I shot with TheKlawMan and his new Browning today, his clay destruction rate has already doubled over what it was with the 870... I think we're creating a clay busting monster!!!

You say you want a monster? You say that you want to pay less than $300 for it? Go to gunbroker and buy a used Mossburg model 535 rifled barrel shotgun (they have 3 1/2" chambers!!) and stuff it with Lightfield 3 1/2" Commander IDS Plus sabot 1 3/8oz. (that's 600 Gr. !) slugs. They fly at 1900 fps and they produce 4809 fps of energy at the muzzle. Midway sells these shells. Hang on to your fillings when you pull the trigger.
 
When you are at the bottom of a deep pit, call it a well, it is easy to improve. What Zippy calls a steep learning curve. What Weatherby isn't saying is that I have a nasty habit that was harmless when shooting the 870. About once per box I will forget to release the trigger to set the next barrel.

Today was encouraging. I think I may be able to groove that XS Skeet much faster than I thought. It may also have helped that I shot a full flat since Wednesday.
 
My, my Big Jim, aren't we getting elitist!! Is it that if it doesn't cost at least $1000 it isn't worth showing off at the gun club? Some of us take the shooting sports as just that, a sport, and we get a lot of satisfaction from shooting our "cheapo" guns.

BigJimP is anything but Elitist. While all the guys, especially Zippy13, Dave McC, Oneounce, Weatherby, and Jim, helped me a lot with my 870 Express, BigJimP spent an awful lot of time trying to help me figure the Remington out. While it is really not a Clays gun, he suggested inexpensive ways to make it more sutiable for Trap, if I wanted to spend more he suggested some relatively inexpensive semis, but if I could budget for an O/U he suggested the Citori XS Skeet for me to use as an all around clays gun.

Perhaps you confused Slugo for BigJim.

Not too frequently, Dave. Even if the budget allowed it I don't know if this wimpy body will. I am giving both a rest for about a week and scheduling time on the patterning board (with a full choke Jim) to check POI to POA. Judging how Weatherby was smoking the Skeet targers with it, I think both barrels are pretty nicley regulated.
 
You start reloading light 7/8 or even 3/4 oz loads for skeet and your shooting shoulder will thank you, and the lower costs will allow you more shooting for he same money
 
Actually I was mainly shooting 7/8, but some were 1 oz. I am chalking it up to firing double what I am used to doing. Still, I may try some 3/4 for skeet and stick with the 7/8 for trap.
 
BigJim is around, he just hasn't posted in this thread, yet. I'm surprised he's being called an elitist in abstentia. I don't have a clue about WD 40.

K-Law, my friend, releasing the trigger, between shots with an O/U shooting doubles, is part of that really steep learning curve. ;)
 
Klawman, you are exactly right. I was having a "senior moment" there and confusing BigJimP with Slugo. My most sincere apologies to BigJimP and any others that were offended by my remarks to BigJimP. I should have addressed them to Slugo.
 
Zippy, Are you saying that simply releasing the trigger is supposed to be difficult? I figured I was just being a clutz, like when I tried to pull the slide on my 870 when I was supposed to pull the trigger. I think I have to rewire what passes for my brain. Actually, if I only remember to release the trigger, I think doubles are easier than singles.

(I edited this after it dawned on me what Zippy was saying; that learning to release the trigger is so very basic that any body should get used to it soon. I agree with him. The first time it happened I should have figured out not to do it again. Next time I try skeet I will see if my finger can do such a simple thing as to release the trigger.)

That's okay JiminTexas. As another Jim you should know how sensitive Jims can be and those of his that know of BigJims battle with rhoids want to shield him tender feelings from needless aggravation. (By way of disclosure I have to admit to being a James by way of middle names.)

On the contrary, it should be easily learned -- that's what makes the curve steep. Other things, like minutely adjusting your hold point at 27-yards because of a breeze, take a lot longer to figure out.
 
Well, I'm glad to hear he's doing a lot better weatherby ..../ and the Browning Citori XS Skeet he bought is a nice gun !

My word / I'm getting smacked ...and I wasn't even here ....I've actually had to work today for a change ....:confused: ...but ok / thanks for the comments guys ...and yes, in general, for the record - I think you can shoot whatever gun you want to shoot for "casual clay taraget shooting" .../ the trick is making the gun "fit" you well enough to have some fun / and break some targets.

You don't need a $ 3,000 Browning O/U to shoot clays ...unless you're goals are to get into serious competitions on a state or zone level where a couple of targets is the difference between the bottom 10% and seriously competing in the top 10%......and then, a Browning O/U, like the Citori XS Skeet that klawman bought ( and I own a few of them too ) is probably an entry level gun ...a solid gun / but not as good a gun as Perazzi, Blaser, Kolar or Krieghoff in my opinion. But everybody should buy and shoot whatever they want ...

I'm happy that klawman is having some fun ....and somebody like weatherby is there to cousel him a little.../ with some training, I hope his scores are up in the 18 - 21 average range before long !!
 
Weatherby deserves a big round of applause ....he's doing all the heavy lifting ...trying to keep the klawman on track ... ( it can't be easy ...) ...

Seriously, it was bugging me that my left shoulder was hurting as well as my right wrist until I went to reload 5 boxes and I remembered the other time I reloaded several boxes in a short period. I simply have to pull the lever with both hands and/or get an extended lever.
