This wasn't a screwup on Heston's part. The way the nationalCCW site reported it sure as hell was!
Heston was speaking in front of 174 editorial cartoonists from across the nation. It was very important that he come across as "reasonable" by their standards...these are the guys that can draw caricatures of him, Bush or whoever with 3ft noses dripping bullets or some other stupidity.
That is NOT the right time for a "from my cold dead hands" type of speech.
So he came across very mildly, for a DAMNED good reason, and it's possible to interpret his words as support for registration if you cross your eyes, squint, and approach the issue already prejudiced against the NRA.
Think, people.
Classic "straight talk" is what we all respect and want, but in today's mass-media world it doesn't always work. Neal Knox talks about how crafty and devious the current NRA crew like LaPierre, Heston and the rest are and he's absolutely 110% correct.
THANK GOD ALMIGHTY THEY'RE THE SNEAKIEST SOBS TO EVER RUN THE NRA.
'Cuz they're up against Clinton and Gore, who ain't just sneaky, they're downright evil AS WELL.
Think: say Heston makes one public speech genuinely in favor of registration (which he didn't, this is hypothetical). Do you guys think that a week/month/year later some politician will "call him on his promise" and there'll suddenly be no way to back out of such a scheme?
Like hell. If that's how politics worked, politicians would never lie!
What matters is power and public perception. Editorial cartoonists shape public perception; as a group, nobody has more influence. Put Bush in office, let him pick another robe or two for the Supremes in time for Emerson which sure as hell looks like it'll go all the way and boys, the only debate left will be how much gun control just got $hitcanned, and NOT new licensing/registration systems.
In short: GIVE 'EM HELL, CHUCK, EXCEPT WHEN IT'S TACTICALLY NECESSARY TO FLING BS WITH THE BIGGEST SHOVEL AVAILABLE!
