Heston (NRA) makes anti-gun statement

I emailed the NRA. I am slowly regretting my life membership. Once we get past the elections I most likely will cancel me membership and give the balance to GOA.

I'm still a little miffed about the NRA letting Heston have another term.

especially after watching Bill Maher the other day:
paraphrase.. "The NRA amended their constitution to allow Heston to serve another term.... I guess constitutions can change??"

To be fair, I don't think Heston was endorsing registration, seems he was acknowledging that it may come to that.

sigh...

Give me a break. These guys are pimping for NRA dollars.

I would gladly register and license ALL of my guns if it meant no further restrictions and national CCW, for example.

I am quite sure that Mr. Heston does not support registration for its own sake.

Divided we fall. Find another way to raise money.

MountainGun44, if you think that agreeing to liscensing and registration will stop demands for further control (and I am not saying that you do) I suggest you look up some Austrailian and Canadian gun control web pages. You will see that they are busily coming up with and proposing laws to eliminate "loopholes" and make it harder and harder to own a gun, or an air rifle.

This is not the first NRA "licensing" gaff.

If you recall this year's story of the Ohio wholesale pizza delivery man that was acquitted of illegal CCW, the NRA-TV clip with the "news chic" on the NRA web site saying something like, "Ohio citizens have no way to license their hand guns..."

A few more mistakes like that and the wise man begins to wonder.

Rick

ANYBODY who agrees to licensing, especially for a PROMISED end to gun legislation should have their head examined! Your're dealing with politicians. Even if they didn't want to kill the gun culture, they would do it just because of their natural greed.

Here's some recent examples - don't you "a license is OK if . . ." people read them?
http://www.thefiringline.com:8080/forums/showthread.php?threadid=27599 Nassau County license fees upped from $40 to $200
http://www.masslive.com/newsflash/index.ssf?/news/pstories/ae611gun.html gun owners could face fines of $500 to $5,000 (the State said it was a 'one time' license - now it's renewable on your birthdate).

I received the following reply to my message to NRA membership services.

Dear Eric,
Mr Heston never said that he or the NRA advocates licensing or registration of firearms. We are strictly against such measures. Mr Heston mearly acknowledged the reporters position. You have the text there, read it carefully.

Thank You,

My original message (with quote removed):

If this verbal exchange actually took place, I want it known that I oppose any form of registration of gun owners or hand guns, including that damn yellow form I have to sign every time I buy a new gun from a dealer. The NRA is going down the wrong road if it's going to support registration, and the organization knows full well that registration leads to confiscation!. You cannot expect me to support a gun rights organization that supports registation.

sent this message to NRA

Dear NRA.

I am a member of the NRA and have been for some time, Pleas check your records as to my membership

It has been reported that Mr. Heston while in public debate offered to support hand gun licensing. It is my dearist hope that in some way Mr. Heston was misquoted or in someother way misrepresented.

If not the NRA must not stand by ANY statmenet that would in any way look favorbaly on the licence and registation of firearms and if speaking as the President of the NRA a PUBLIC retraction of this statement and an IMMEDIATE investigation into the matter with intent to the possible need to remove Mr. Heston form the office which he now hold is in order.

If it is now the position of the NRA that the RIGHT to keep and bear arms is but now a privilege to be licensed then I may need to rethink my membership in what has been and I hope too be a fine organization.

Here is the NRA's response to my email.

"Dear Elias,
Mr Heston and the NRA do not want or endorse gun licensing or registration.I received several emails about Mr Heston's comments, you as well as the others are seeing things that were just not said".
Thank You,

Here is my reply back,

Let me see if I understand this right. A reporter say's he's for licensing and Mr. Heston say's we may end up there and your point is well taken. I'm sorry but that doesn't sound like "I am against licensing and here's why". Are you saying that this report on his conversation is
a lie or that what he intended to say was different from what we read?

"Moses" does well when he's presenting prepared remarks. When he talks off the cuff, he usually steps on his tongue, as he did here. He had a perfect opportunity to lay out the argument against registration. The NRA is really starting to tick me off.

Let's see. NRA gets money from gun owners. NRA screws up. Things get worse for gun owners. NRA gets more money. NRA makes stupid remark. Things get worse for gun owners. NRA gets more money.

Too bad it is the leading lobby for us. I think I would rather send my dues to the Mafia and let them do the persuading of the anti gun legislators.

And I could get American Wiseguy every month.

This wasn't a screwup on Heston's part. The way the nationalCCW site reported it sure as hell was!

Heston was speaking in front of 174 editorial cartoonists from across the nation. It was very important that he come across as "reasonable" by their standards...these are the guys that can draw caricatures of him, Bush or whoever with 3ft noses dripping bullets or some other stupidity.

That is NOT the right time for a "from my cold dead hands" type of speech.

So he came across very mildly, for a DAMNED good reason, and it's possible to interpret his words as support for registration if you cross your eyes, squint, and approach the issue already prejudiced against the NRA.

Think, people.

Classic "straight talk" is what we all respect and want, but in today's mass-media world it doesn't always work. Neal Knox talks about how crafty and devious the current NRA crew like LaPierre, Heston and the rest are and he's absolutely 110% correct.

THANK GOD ALMIGHTY THEY'RE THE SNEAKIEST SOBS TO EVER RUN THE NRA.

'Cuz they're up against Clinton and Gore, who ain't just sneaky, they're downright evil AS WELL.

Think: say Heston makes one public speech genuinely in favor of registration (which he didn't, this is hypothetical). Do you guys think that a week/month/year later some politician will "call him on his promise" and there'll suddenly be no way to back out of such a scheme?

Like hell. If that's how politics worked, politicians would never lie!

What matters is power and public perception. Editorial cartoonists shape public perception; as a group, nobody has more influence. Put Bush in office, let him pick another robe or two for the Supremes in time for Emerson which sure as hell looks like it'll go all the way and boys, the only debate left will be how much gun control just got $hitcanned, and NOT new licensing/registration systems.

In short: GIVE 'EM HELL, CHUCK, EXCEPT WHEN IT'S TACTICALLY NECESSARY TO FLING BS WITH THE BIGGEST SHOVEL AVAILABLE!

Cut and paste from www.NationalCCW.com :

... The exchange between the NRA chief and the reporter went like this; The reporter stated, "I am a big proponent of the right to own a gun, and I own one myself, and am member of your organization . Why does the NRA oppose the registration of handguns? I own a handgun and though it is not registered I would gladly register if it were required by law. I think that would help a lot & I don't understand the NRA taking this position." Heston's reply was, "That is an open question, and it's a valid position to take. It may well be that we will arrive at registration and licensing. As you I'm sure know, you require a license to hunt. Your point is well taken." ...

I am a vehement opponent of mealy-mouthing and "playing the game" with the media. That way, the language is controlled by the media and, consequently, the socialists will remain in control of the debate. I am VERY dissatisfied with the Lapierre crowd and shenanigans they pull to remain in power. However, as I read this particular exchange, I don't see Heston making any anti-gun statement. Sorry.

I think he missed a good opportunity to make a position statement about registration leading to confiscation. And I don't much like the fawning, "... and it's a valid position to take" and "... Your point is well taken." That's just boot licking, but not quite the anti-gun statement I expected to read.

...

I understand that Heston is getting a little old, and may have mispoke; however, it isn't just in his words that he's selling us all out, it is in his deeds! I sent a scathing email to the NRA, will be interested in reading the reply. More Politically Correct crap, I'm sure. The NRA is politically incorrect like Bill Maher is politically incorrect. Did any of you see the "Politically Incorrect" discussion with Ted Nugent? Mr. Maher was talking nothing but crap to Ted and "penis envy". Ever notice how the liberals accuse us of using guns as phallic symbols, yet they are always the ones that bring it up? Seems like they have it on their minds more than we do.

Jim March: The only way Heston can come off as "reasonable" in front of THAT bunch is to sell us down the river; Most of them are our conscious ENEMIES. Forget "reasonable", we slowly lose as long as we're "reasonable" because "reasonable" is defined by the OTHER SIDE.

What we need isn't "reasonable", we need "all out war"; Metaphoricly for the moment, of course. Speaking of which, remember the NRA's "Clinton lies!" propaganda campaign? Noticed it lately? Just as I expected, the moment the Board of Directors election was over, the campaign ended, and the NRA goes back to being "reasonable". It wasn't aimed at the public, it was aimed at US!

LaPierre and crew switch into all-out gonzo attack mode for a couple of months, each board election, to make the peons happy, and then, as soon as their control of the board is secure, it's back to selling us down the river, losing as slowly as possible, instead of trying to win. It's getting to be a regular pattern, isn't it?

One thing I would like to see before I persue this any further is a referance for the full text of what was said between the reporter and Mr.Heston. I am starting to wonder if the National CCW page reported the whole story or just the part that met their needs. Without a referance it's just a story.

Let me see if I understand this right. A reporter say's he's for licensing and Mr. Heston say's we may end up there and your point is well taken.

Brett Bellmore - Right on!

I wrote essentially the same thoughts to Chris Knox during the election, and that was his take on it also.

I was hoping it was a "worm turned" event, but as you pointed out, it's back to
"business (concession) as usual".

Ok let me climb into my Flameproof suit. I think I will be needing it as People seem to take great pleasure in flaming me these days.
leedesert I agree with you 100% I have always found the National CCW page a bit. well. Untrustworthy. Not to say anything there is a lie or intentionally misleading. But to me it has always been a "I will pick and choose this story so it seems different that what it really is" type of thing.. Now no one will deny that this is what the media does today. The only difference is that This one has a pro gun slant.
I remember things like. "Clinto to impose Martial law For New Years." Or something like that. And I cant' seem to remember any Military forces in the street. No mass riots.. In fact it was nice and quiet.
Now, keeping that in mind, I read the page. But I don't take the info at face value untill I have read it somewhere else. Anyone can make up the news. I want proof and I want confermation. Now in all Fairness I am like this with any news site. From Worldnetdaily(online globe LOL) to MSNBC and CNN,
