Henry Golden Boy-22LR...wow!

The 39A is a fine rifle indeed. I had one made in 1960 and let it get away from me. Accuracy is about the same but the GB has the Marlin beat hands down for looks. I wouldn't mind having another 39A but I woudn't give up my GB for one.

I too looked at these last year and contacted the factory about the reciever material. They informed me that it is basically an Aluminum alloy on all .22 models, brass or black. Although they look great, think I'll stay happy with my Pre-84 Marlin. However, that is me and I would never tell a man what to do with his money or wife. Be safe.

H001 and H004 Henry lever guns have a receiver cover made out of ZAMAC (zinc aluminum magnesium alloy composite). These receiver covers are either painted (for the H001), or brass plated (for the H004).

The Golden Boy ships with a black barrel band, but a brass-plated band can be ordered ($27 I think).

As was recently discovered, the plating/paint can be stripped off the cover and the bare metal can be polished to a chrome-like finish. Several folks (me included), have stripped the paint from their H001 and simply buffed the surface with 000 or 0000 steel wool to give a more aged appearance to the cover (and barrel band).

IMHO, the Golden Boy may be the prettiest of the Henry 22's, but it's also limited in terms of the kinds of sights you can install. For this reason, I recommend that you get the H001T (it's got the octagon barrel like the GB, but the comb drop is less severe, and you have a 3/8 dovetail groove on the receiver cover. This means you can use a receiver sight (like the Williams FP-GR), or a scope with standard rings without having a gunsmith do any machining.

On top of that, you can strip the paint of the receiver cover, and even have it brass-plated if that's your thing.

If you look around, you could get lucky and find a H001T for $280 (like I did last December). That's dirt cheap for a damn fine rifle. Here's mine:

I understand (but stand correcting) that the Henry design is a design acquired from Erma some years ago.

I understand that the receiver is Brass plated alloy. Has anyone had any experiences with this scratching?

Under normal use, it should be fine, but like anything else, it's gonna get scratched up if it's abused. I don't know if it's clear coated, but if I were to get a golden boy, I'd seriously consider a couple of coats of Alumi-Hyde clear gloss to protect the plating.

My henry had sights that shot abot 8 inches right and 5 inches high at 25 yards, and fed rounds straight up jammingaginst roof of reciever, and failed to ignite rounds hal the time.

Henry thogh did say theyll check it ot and replace it if its defective, i hope that works out.

I just won one! I'm pretty exited to hear that everyone likes them so much, mine has the NRA seal scroll engraved on the reciever. I bought two $5 tickets at the county fair and low and behold I got the phone call! anything I should know about it as far as cleaning/takedown is concerned?

The GB is a hefty gun for its size.
People like them.
I find the action acceptable.
As mentioned the drop means you cannot get a cheek-weld on this gun -- it is referred to as a "traditional profile." Scope it? LOL!
They're not the slimiest family in the world, but, no Imperato has ever personally answered an e-Mail. My Brother-in-Law may have in their name though...
The cream of the crop is, of course, a Browning lever .22. And no, they're not cheap.
Finally, someone is selling engraved versions of the GB -- yes, you'll pay much for that handiwork too.

SWEET!!! Congratulations. Great guns, enjoy!!!

I have had mine for a number of years now and it is sweet the action works effortlessly I love the 39a and I got to fire a 39a when it was new compared to the GB and there is no comparison the GB is smoother. I liked it so much I bought a second one for my dad. We wanted to have it engraved but that never happened to due at the time no one would do it but now Henry is doing right out of the factory so I have heard upon request. Beautiful gun excellent workmanship and very nice.

I've had a GB for about 10 years now and I have nothing but good to say about the rifle. I have Marlins and Winchesters that I really love, but the GB is smoother and just as accurate as they are for less money. Some folks knock the materials used in their construction, but mine has been fired a lot over the last decade and I haven't seen the least bit of wear on any of the moving parts outside of normal finish wear. I really doubt those folks will be around to eat crow once the recievers on these rifles do finally wear out.

You can always call Anthony Imperato and ask him any question you may have about any Henry rifle. He does like to hear from people who need to find out any info on Henry rifles, it's his passion.

good point az_imuth, lots of people complained about what materials they were made from but no one complained about the 10/22 receiver when it was made from the same type of material. You get a GB you will not regret it each action has 80hrs of work placed into them. and it shows. Allot of rifle for less money and their customer service is top notch.
The story that comes to mind is there was a gun show at Missouri all the big time gun makers were there with sales reps, EXCEPT Henry they sent Anthony Imperato a guy went up to him and said he liked his product but had a problem with the gun. He explained what the problem was and moments later Anthony was on the phone wrote down the information gave it to the guy and told him send the gun back postage is paid for already they will fix it and make it right. A month later he got the gun back and as promised it was fixed.
