I was at Dick's S.G. today and I got a good look at the Henry "Golden Boy" rifle in .22LR.

Wow. Beautiful wood, octagon barrel and hefty brass body. Seemed extremely well made. The tag said $369 and I was very tempted to put money down on it.

Anyone have experience with their .22 Golden Boy? Are they problematic? Worth the money?

I don't have one but everything I have heard about them is good. I'm just chiming in because I don't think the receiver on the .22 is brass but is in fact a brass cover. Only the big boy center-fire rifles are brass receivers. Not that it makes a difference in function I just though I let you know.

I don't have the Golden Boy but I've got the regular youth model and it's one of the smoothest actions I've ever felt. It's accurate, completely reliable with everything I've put thru it, plus it's really, really fun to shoot. :D

I'm impressed with the Henry lever guns, but don't see the iron sights well at my age. I'd hate to put a scope or receiver sight on a Golden Boy, but wouldn't hesitate put a receiver sight on a blued receiver.

If and when the grandkids get more interested in shooting...

I have the .22mag version. I do not often get to shoot it but it is a very well made firearm.

They are pretty. It seems the stock has more drop than I like, at least the ones I've handled, but I might get one, one of these days anyway. :D

Congratulations. Nice gun.

I could not tell if body has a brass cover or if it is solid brass through and through. It looked solid to me.

Does anyone out there know for sure which?

Awesome gun, I have one. Tack driver. It's been a while since I took it apart, but I seem to remember it's brass all the way through.

Very well made firearm, well worth the money.

It's not brass. Henry calls it Brasslite. I think it's a Zinc alloy. I've heard they have a cover but I haven't seen the need to take mine apart just to find out. It's got the smoothest action right out of the box of any levergun you'll find anywhere and it's accurate to boot. The LOP is a tad long for me but not enough to keep me from shooting it a lot. My HGB is one that's not going anywhere. This is one gun I'm not letting go of.

Brasslite stove company makes their stoves out of sheet brass. I'd put money (but not much) that the Henry "Brasslite" receivers are brass plated metal, probably aluminum.

Brass doesn't have the strength to be used in a thin sheet metal over a steel or plastic receiver (like the old Remington Model 66). IMHO, a heavy brass plating over steel or aluminum would be the way to go and that's what I believe is the way the Henry is done.

Don't matter about the cover it's still a fine rifle. The GB doesn't have plastic sights or barrel band.

All this Golden Boy praise is amazing to me. A while ago I was all fired up to get one, saw a thread comparing lever action .22's (either here or THR) where they were unanimously panned, so I took a pass on the Henry. Now I am confused.

I wish I bought a few when they first came out, they were giving them away.
Then the cowboy shooting crowd discovered them and the price doubled.

I love the classic lever guns

I have a Henry Big Boy, .44 Magnum. I've looked at the .22's and thought about them, but then someone gave me a Ruger 10/22 for free, and well, I am a levergunner at heart, but free IS free. I still like the looks of the Henry Golden Boy. Most people I've talked to like their Golden Boy rifles, and have not had any problems with them. As I understand it, the reciever on the Big Boy is brass and on the Golden Boy it is brass-covered-metal, not sure what metal it is, and I think they call that Brasslite. Anyway, since you seem to want to know "for sure," I reccomend that you email the company President, Mr. Anthony Imperato at this address: info@henryrepeating.com He personally answers every email that comes into the company. They have excellent customer service. Some folks come on this forum and bad mouth the company and the rifles, and I think one guy does it often but has gun-dealer experience and has had customers have problems with these rifles, so I will leave that as an open question. I can't speak to reliability of the golden boy rifles, but I can tell you that I fire my Big Boy with .44 Mag (winter) and .44 Special (rest of the year) about 100 to 150 rounds at a time, and that's probably 2-3 times a month, maybe it averages out to twice a month. Never had a problem with my Big Boy rifle. I am religious about cleaning after each shooting session (never go to bed with dirty rifles...) I fire store-bought factory-loaded ammo, and have never had a problem. For what it's worth, I am not able to really use iron sights on any rifle due to visual issues, and that applies to my Arisaka, my Winchester model 94's, etc. So, for my Big Boy, I've got the Henry scope mounting bracket, and I use a Bushnell 4x fixed power scope. I love that rifle. If I had a Golden Boy, I'd need the scope mounting bracket, and I admit that I'd probably just get the regular lever rifle in .22 (blued metal) and add the scope instead of going "brass" and adding a scope, but that is unique to my vision and my taste.

I can't speak for everybody but I've had my GB over a year now and it's had quite a few thousand rounds fired through it by me and my daughter. It's never missed a beat. No FTF, FTE, no hangups, nothing. It just keeps cranking them out. It may break tomorrow and if it does I'll deal with it. I'll be mighty surprised if it does tho.

I think I remember that thread, and IIRC they were comparing the Golden Boy to a Marlin 39A. Most people who replied, myself included thought the Marlin was the better rifle. At least in my case that doesn't mean I think the GB is "bad." I just think the Marlin is "better."
