The question really is which should I buy first - you "need" both - and I suppose a .22 LR/.22 Short/.22 "Regular" first and then the .22 mag but I love the .22 mag and if I could have only one rimfire it would be the .22 mag as it is more versatile. Henry action is so smoooooooth.....................

Depends on what you want it for. Varminting? Get the magnum. Fun gun with occassional critter duty? 22LR all the way.

The .22 Magnum hands down. It's a blast to shoot, about 2 1/2 times the power of the .22LR. It's a great cartridge for bolt action and lever action rifles. Brings the power of a larger caliber to the .22 platform for what I consider to be a reasonable cost. For me, I use the .22LR for the semi-auto's (795, 597VTR, 10/22, ect) but in the others I shoot the .22 Mag. My favorite rifle to shoot is still my Marlin 982 and a lot of it is because of that .22 mag cartridge. btw - the Henry Golden Boy in .22 Magnum is high on my want list.

The magnum gives you more bang for your buck and the 22LR gives you more shooting for the buck. I chose shooting.

Lets see...a .22WMR takes coyote at up to 150 yards...better be at under 50 for a .22lr to do it.

New ammo (30 & 33-grain) makes the .22WMR almost as fast as .17HMR :)

So if you are hunting, .22WMR is the better of the two. It'll drop deer & anything smaller.
(Note: most states don't allow rimfire use for taking deer these days...darn shame, too)

If yer just plinkin, .22lr does the trick.

But if you want something to hand down to yer grandkids...get a Marlin 39, pre-rebounding hammer (1994?) or pre-crossbolt safety.
