Help with gun for wife please

I really like the idea of the tip up barrel, I know beretta makes some, others might also, make sure to get one in her hand to try.

The snub nosed revolver is an expert's gun.

Although the choice must ultimately be hers, try to get the tip-up Berettas into her hands. The similar Taurus guns are good, but the narrow DAO triggers can be harder on the hands. The Tomcat has a nice fat grip to spread the recoil out and a nice wide trigger.

The downside is the fact that these guns have a unique method of operation. If you try to clear a malfunction the way you've done for other guns you'll likely make the jam worse. For a total beginner that may not be an issue. Also avoid the Taurus pistols with the fake pearl grips. They will be cracked and broken within a hundred rounds. Trust me, go with wood.

Go to your local gunshop, and have her try and work the action of both types of pistols. See which one she feels more comfortable with. My thinking is a Taurus, Ruger, Charter Arms in the new 327 federal Magnum. More power than a 38 spl. plus, you get an extra round, and she can pratice with 32 sw shorts, which are really low in noise and recoil. She can get comfortable with the pistol, and then you can load with the 327 feds for defense, she won't worry about recoil if the need arises to use the pistol, but you can be assured that the powerful 327 with solve any issue.
Another pistol one tends to look over is the Taurus or Smith 9 shot 22 magnum revolvers. 22 magnum puts up better terminal ballistics than a 38 spl., and supplies very lite recoil. however, it is loud in a small barrel. I own a full time gun shop and i am a firearms instructor, both weapons have had great reviews by my clients of the same gender and age is your wife. You my have to have a professional trigger job on a new revolver as they are coming from the factory now with heavy triggers, due to ever vigilent trial lawyers. I have had to do this for a few ladies in that age group do to arthritis issues. PM me if I can be of any more help.

The biggest flaw with the "tip-up" barrel argument is that it takes precious time to pop open the barrel, then fumble with a loose round, trying to get it into the chamber under stress, closing the barrel and then having to contend with a either a rather horrendous DA pull or a cocking of the hammer with a thumb, neither of which is easy to do with arthritis.

Of course, each case is different.

Wife carry

My wife choose the S&W 340 PD. She has it loaded with 38s but likes the flexibilty of 357s. Actually, I like the flexibility part.

My take on this is don’t pick out a gun for your wife, you will find out just how stupid and wrong you can be!!!!
Give her suggestions given here,,,, general SUGGESTIONS only.
Let her pick it out, all on her own.
If she doesn’t like it,,, it’s your fault.
If it ends up to heavy,,,, it’s your fault.
If the gun has too much recoil,,,,, it’s your fault.
Did I take the above suggestions???
NO.:D
But it’s also one reason I have 2 more guns in my collection that I didn’t have 6 years ago before I got married.
Walther PPKs, Glock 26, now she carries a S&W 60.
Would you buy her a dress without her being there?
If you would,,, you’re beyond help.:)
Good luck,,,

As other people have suggested let your wife try different guns until she finds the one that works for her. I went through the same thing several years ago with my wife - trying to find a gun that she would actually practice with and carry. I figured a J-frame S&W would be the best and I was wrong. She shot many different hand guns from .22 bullseye pistols up to my 10mm. She is very recoil sensitive and didn't even like very light hand loaded .38's out of a full size S&W. Her favorite gun (and the only one she will shot or carry) ended up being a full sized Springfield XD-40. It must fit her hand just right because she says there is no recoil with that gun while the Glock 22 kicks too hard for her. She has learned technique in racking the gun as opposed to brute strength. I am just happy she found something she was comfortable with and would use.

Borrow as many different guns as you can, take her to the range and let her decide for herself.

maybe try a walther p22? at her age racking the slide will be no issue and using CCI Stingers it will get the job done without making her worry or flinch too bad

Well my wife is alot younger and bigger than yours and I thought the .38 special would be a good pickup for her as some of the others have mentioned.. I bought the new ruger LCR snub nose .38.. Well I'll tell you what, theres no slide to rack but that thing is hell on a hand. If your wife might not be able to rack a slide she definately wouldnt enjoy or feel comfortable or confident shooting a snub-nose in my opinion. I was out at my local gunshop taking transfer of my new remington 870 spec ops and i started talking to a couple that had to be in their 60's.. they were buying a walther p22. I asked who was it for and the lady said it was hers and her second one.. She said she shots better than some of the guys with it and no recoil that bothers here.. It was already fitted with a laser and looked well built.. If you want more stopping power take a look at the pk380. I have not used this weapon but everyone at the shop highly recommended it for someone who wanted less recoil and smaller carry. The snub nose is a good backup pistol for me and maybe an emergency carry for my wife but she did not enjoy shooting it the first time out at the range. She actually preferred handling my colt .45 over the little snub which surprised the hell out of me. The thing just bucks and bites and you need a strong experienced hand and shooter to appreciate it. Just my .02
