Help with first handgun

Being your first gun, I would go with "feel" as a big criteria in deciding your first gun. Of the list you have given, I would go with the USP as MY first choice. After 18 years of shooting, I have just preferred them over the others on the list. They are very durable, reliable, accurate and easy to maintain.
When I started shooting years ago, I first bought a defensive handgun 1st then bought a 22lr revolver for practice. The revolver taught me trigger control & target acquisition. It was also fun to shoot because ammo is soooo cheap. Went through alot of rounds with that 22. Even used it to teach my son how to shoot.
My nickel's worth ;)

Since this is a compromise pistol and will eventually be your wife's, it should fit her best. Hopefully, the size-differential in your hands is not too great, or you ewill have some adapting to do.

Brand-wise I'd go with Glock, SIG or HK. I'm a big fan of CZ's but they'er kind of heavy for a 9mm carry platform. I know some females who really like the HK USPc, and tho the 239 may feel nice, I agree that muzzle flip may well be an annoyance, esp. for your wife. In addition to looking at the SIG 228, which is really close to the 229 in size, see if you can find a 225. They are of a single-stack design.

I personally like decockers and dislike safeties on carry guns, but either way I don't see the manual safety as a necessity for a new handgun shooter.

Well since you said cost wasn't an issue I'll suggest you look at an HK P7M8, or the P7M13 (though these must be bought used as they hold 13 rounds). The P7 (PSP) is almost the same as the P7M8.

The rest of the guns you listed are all great choices (though I'm not a Glock person, some are). The USP9 is a full size gun... but otherwise great, finding mags for it that hold more than 10 rounds is difficult. And I don't believe there are any full capacity magazines in the US for the USP9c, so you're stuck with 10 rounds. I generally have serious issues with buying a handicapped handgun, and while hi-caps are available for the others (except maybe the beretta), I'd stick with single stack magazines. That being the case, of those you listed, I'd choose the SIG P239.
