Help With a Blackhawk

I am seriously considering buying a Blackhawk. It will be my first one and I need some help with what I should be paying.

The description is a Ruger BN-34X Blackhawk revolver chambered for .357 mag and 9mm in excellent condition. Serial number is 37-80511. In AS NEW condition.

Any and all help is appreciated, so I can bug all of you with my Blackhawk pics. :D

SW40F, thanks! I see you did some shopping for me. Is there a difference between this gun and a New blackhawk? Or is this a New Blackhawk? From what I've heard the Blackhawk is supossed to be a good shootin iron... :)

Hi Bullrock.

I have a Blackhawk 41 magnum with 4 5/8 inch bbl. Works great and looks great as well. Also just won an auction last month for the Blackhawk convertible 357/9mm, got it for 325 with shipping. Just won another one today, Blackhawk convertible 45LC/45 ACP.

I definitelly like Blackhawk revolvers. I have been using them since 1977. All have been new models, and blued. Would like to get some Stainless Steel versions, but haven't filled my need for Blued versions yet.

By the way, I got the 45 convertible for $370 with shipping, so thought that was a pretty good deal. Hope this helps.
Mark

Thanks

One of the things that attract me to this model...I have never in my life fired a revolver in 9mm. Maybe I can win this one and make it a first @ 70...

That is, if I can get time off from my busy sex life... :D

Most of the used .357/9mm combo Blackhawks found today will have a brand new 9mm cylinder. You can just about toss that cylinder in the trash as the Blackhawk just doesn't shoot the 9mm very accurately. It's not a problem with the revolver it's just that a .355" bullet going down a .357" barrel just don't equate to fine accuracy.

Dang, I really don't know...

I have two old 3-screw Blackhawks (.357 magnum& .41 magnum) with no transfer bar safety installed.

See the following link for a 3-screw that shows, well, 3 screws on the frame...

The two links I posted earlier look like newer models.

My Blackhawk is a fine shootin' iron, the closest thing to a 'tack driver' I own.

hey bull, save your money.

I had the same idea several years ago. what a waste of time and money.

Though the idea is just grand, the reality was really disappointing for me. I could not find any 9mm round that would shoot worth a darn (FMJs, HPs, JSPs, RNLs, etc) ie: large groups, lots of flyers, key-holes. etc. The .355 bullet in the .357 bore isn't a good match I guess. This specimen was a rather good shooter with .38 and .357 BTW.

Besides, the New Model Blackhawk has the same cylinder indexing set-up as the Vaquero you had, ie: the chamber doesn't line up with the notch in the frame when it clicks. IIRC, you didn't like that much and were looking at a New Vaquero with the Colt-style system instead.

Just my opinion though, feel free to get it and suffer the same frustration... :D ;)

You might want to try the .45 Colt/.45 ACP Blackhawk instead. Both calibers shoot well in my experience.

edited to add:
The Old Model Blackhawk (the earliest were the Flat-Top models) lacked the transfer bar, had the 3 screw frame, etc. Discontinued in '73?

the New Model Blackhawk has the 2 pin frame, has the transfer bar and has the same internals as a fixed sight Vaquero.

The New Vaquero has the smaller frame of the original Flat-top Blackhawk, but has the Colt style indexing, etc. The 50th Anniversary Blackhawk is like a New Vaquero in frame size, lockup and cylinder indexing, but has adj. sights.

Like utaherrn said, it indexes like the Vaquero you had, and since you didn't like it on that, I'm not sure why you'd want it on a Blackhawk, unless your planning on putting aftermarket parts in it? Good luck with whatever you decide.

Majic, utaherrn, harbinger

Your information is greatly appreciated. No 9mm Blackhawk for me. I'm outta the bidding... :)

I would just get a normal Blackhawk..

I am trying to get another Super Blackhawk in the 4 5/8" configuration :D

Maybe not correct when it comes to how it works, but it's one of those guns I'll never wear out.

The auction just closed and guess what? I'm the winner!!! :o I was only 2 bucks higher than the next bidder who seemed to be agressively after the damn thing. Now whatdaIdo???

I have to buy it, so I will. I'll probably shoot it in .357 and sell it or trade it. It isn't that I didn't listen to you guys. I bid too quickly...Learned my lesson  :( Blackhawk anyone???

Soooo, it's not the guns you like....you've got the fever!
There's support groups for people such as yourself.... :D
Congrats, you bidding junkie. ;)

So,... you've got a great revolver in a great caliber (.357) and you can shoot it in another (9mm) for fun if you want to. This is a problem solved by getting rid of it?

Harbinger go join an auction and buy a gun!!! :p

WRONG!To some extent I did want the Blackhawk. I just didn't want a gun that can't shoot straight (9mm) or a repeat of the loading/unloading frustration I get when shooting my Vaquero...I jumped too soon, but you gotta admit, it's a nice looking gun for under $350.00... :o

Can't join an auction. Then I'D get the fever. ;)
You've got a good gun for a good price. A few modifications, and finding out what she likes to eat...you might be pleasantly surprised with a gun that shoots 3 different calibers.

A friend has one and have yet to see hin use the 9MM cly.he also says isn't accurate, but shoots just fine with.38 or 357.I want a Blackhawk in .40 and 10MM but haven't found one yet I think there was only about 500 made :)
