HELP: Remington 7400 POI problems

The only one I've seen that would shoot all around a target at close range was replaced by the factory. The block (whatever it's called) under the center of the barrel had come almost completely unattached. You couldn't see the crack at a glance, but apparently when you fired the rifle the barrel would torque up off it.

I used to live just across the street from the local remington rep, a really smart and knowledgeable guy. I used to talk to him when he was home, as he spent weeks it seemed on the road, and he would say that at the factory on the machine rest, the 7400 day in and day out was the most accurate production gun they sold. I have had 3 or 4 over the years and I have a 280 version still that is an absolute tack driver.

The method to attaching the barrel to the receiver and the action tube nut usually means that the whole barrel is left free floating and never should touch anything.

He said that one problem they had had was people actually warping the receiver when they bought cheap mounts and forced the screws in when the mounts were not accurately made. Apparently the top was thin enough to become deformed slightly and that lead to an out of line bolt arrangement, which led to walking shots.

One thing you have found out tho, is that Remington has made great strides in upgrading their customer service dept. It was not too many years ago, that guns sent in for service would take months and months to reappear.

This was apparently one of the top issues when the company was split off from Dupont.

I had put in my letter explaining the problem that I was using a Leupold one peice base. I am not sure if that is why they attached the slave scope with that base, or if that is what they always use.

RBC, sorry havent checked this thread for a while.
I happened by the gun counter and saw a red sticker under the 7400. I thought that it said $200, but could not quite tell from the distance I was away (eyes not what they used to be). A few moments later a sporting goods worker came by and asked if I needed some help, and I asked if that sticker said $200 and if it was for the 7400. The nice lady said yes, and I said I would take it. She said , 'you did not even ask what caliber', and I said it did not matter. I asked if they had any more and was told no. I was just luck that I got it, and I promply drove to every other WM to see if they had any for that price. None did, but they also did not have any 7400 displayed. I think the dept. managers bought them up.
FWIW, the walmarts around me now have 7400's in 270 displayed, and the price has dropped recently to around $360. I will be watching these to see if further drops are forthcoming. Also, Thursdays are the days when the faxes from corporate come in for the mark downs.

7400

I recently purchased one in .270 at a WalMart in Osceola, AR for $299.00 They were fixing to ship all their guns to another WalMart as they were going to quit selling firearms. Couldn't hit much with the iron sights, but I put a Nikon 2x7x32 on it and got here dialed in pretty close. Still have some tweaking to do. It's not a target rifle, but I believe it will serve me well in the field for whitetail.
