Help recommend my lady a handgun

CZ P07 in 40. Handled one at a gun show recently, fits the hand nice, grips are, well, super grippy :p and da/sa plus external safety, its a safe gun. Plus like all CZ's it'll be reliable. And it looks good.

Isn't the P07 full size?

Ok, I would have her check this one out.

BERETTA PX4 STORM TYPE F COMPACT 9MM. the Da/Sa is good if a bit long on the uptake, but I really do like my Full size. Although, the gun might be too big for small hands as I love it but have large hands!

The P09 is full size i think, a P07 is smaller. Like a Glock 19 i think, or regular PX4... I second the PX4 after handling one they are nice, high quality.

I'm in agreement with the Colt Agent suggestions, however, it's also worth it to check out the Browning .380 1911s. Postive safety, low recoil, and easy trigger, very nice for a new shooter.

I'd take a look at one of the Smith Third Generation pistols chambered in .40 S&W. Though long discontinued, you can still find them affordably priced. Very reliable, rugged pistols having all of the features your girlfriend specified.

And welcome to The Firing Line, tucker terra!

I went to the CrimsonTrace.com website first to get an idea what's on the market. I'm not a laser-user and didn't know.

Two guns caught my attention which the CrimsonTrace for which indicated it had products. I've not handled these two to much extent but recognize them as quality with good support & following:
-HK45C (.45ACP)
-S&W Shield (9mm or .40)

I don't know what/if there are shoulder holsters readily available when configured with a laser.

For a 1911, I'll seldom recommend a 1911 to anyone, even though that's what I'm usually carrying if not a Glock, along with a S&W J-frame for a backup gun. If someone insists, then by all means go with a 1911. Just choose one which has the highest chance of reliability as it's no fun shipping a gun back for any kind of work. You said she's already having problems with the slide release of your 1911, although this could be a training issue. My smaller 1911 is a Colt Commander #O4691. There are some nice, lighter models available than what I have, too.

I don't recommend the S&W J-frame, alone, due to its low round count and strong recoil in a .357Mag caliber. Again, if one insists, I'd then recommend the 640Pro, which I also carry.

Humdeedum...

The manual safety throws me... That said, I'd vote check out the Springfield XDm subcompact in 40 s&w. I have the XD subcompact in .40, which is a tad smaller, but a very easy shooter. It's fat, but in a good way. I can reach the slide stop just fine and it's actually more comfortable than the XDs .45, despite the XDs being much slimmer.

and, hey look! they have that in .45 too... ohhhh, if I was into manual safeties... *kicks self* Stop it, Liz!!! You already plenty of XD in your life!

If she was willing to do away with the safety, I'd vote to check out the HK VP in 40...

How much practice is she willing to put in? The reason I ask is that a thumb safety may not be the best option unless she decides to flip it to fire once she drops the hammer. My suggestion is to let her check out the Sig line and see if anything there works for her. They don't have a safety but do have a hammer drop lever. In a high stress situation she may forget to flip the safety and is pulling the trigger and nothing happens. I have seen experienced police officers do just this on the qualification range. There it cost them a few points, on the street it could cost them their lives. Let her choose the gun she wants with the full knowledge of the features and options available. She just might surprise you and us and pick something you or we didn't think of.

Take her shooting and let her make her own decision. Let her try different guns and different calibers.

My wife is fond of 2 that she carries alternately. A S&W 2" 38 J frame and also a Kimber sub-compact 45.

In the field she likes her Ruger 6" Security Six loaded with hot loads with 187 grain LBT bullets, and also a Colt Stainless 1911A1.

When I asked her what was her favorite she told me the 4 were all tied in 1st place.

Let her hold and preferably shoot s Kimber Aegis if you can find one. Although it's a 9mm , it's marketed as great for women with smaller hands. It has a thinner grip, in fact whole gun feels thinner than a 4"1911. I have bigger hands , but still love the way it feels and carries concealed.

If she's been in the military and shot and likes a Sig P229 then shes familiar with big heavy 9mm pistols. Not sure what caliber the Sig was in but I, personally, am a fan of big heavy 9mm guns for rapid accurate follow up shots. But if 9mm is off the table then so be it.

A CZ75 P01 Omega Convertible would be pretty darn hard to beat. I carry a full size SP01 in 9 but I think the P01 might do an ok job of dulling the .40SW's snappiness. And it gives you the ability to swap a decocker for a thumb safety.

UPDATE

Hey guys! (This is the girlfriend),

I went through all of your guys suggestions and made a list of what everybody recommended! Then I took the list to a local gun shop and handled each one. There were a few that really caught my eye but I have to say the S&W M&P Shield .40 was my favorite! I went today and did a "shoot before ya buy" type deal. After tons of research and loving the way it handles, I decided on the S&W M&P Shield.

Thank you to all of those that gave positive feedback!
