Help on choosing a .44

I have a 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk and a 6 1/2" S&W 629 Classic DX. I love 'em both, but if I could keep only one it would only take me about half a millisecond to tell you I would keep the SBH. The SBH recoils less, is smaller, handier, packs better, and is more fun to shoot anyday than the 629. This is of course all subjective, and you will have to decide for yourself. Don't let people con you into long barrels and optics. I can shoot a short barrel with open sights just fine, and it packs a whole lot easier on the hip. To each his own, though.

Read the thread above this one...

for some opinions that are relevant to your decision.

For a steady diet of hot loads, the redhawk has no peer. The S&W is generally smoother and quicker in the hand, but will get beat ragged with loads that the redhawk will handle in 5-gallon buckets.

All depends on how you intend to load it.

Thank you all for your well reasoned responses.

I will be looking seriously at the SBH Hunter, the SBH in 4 5/8, the Ruger Redhawk and S&W 629 Classic.

I will most likely choose the single action, since having done some additional thought since my last post, I will not find myself in bear country all too often. Most probably I will be using the gun for deer hunting in upstate ny. And I like the strength and simplicity of the action. This will allow me more flexibility in reloading for this caliber.

44 Mag.

I have a Super Redhawk 7.5 inch barrel. Love it, magnum loads not a problem for this gun. It's built to shoot the heavy loads. ;) If you can handle the Recoil " Go for it"

have hunted with both 629 in 6.5" and redhawk in 7.5" both carried hogue wood grips and both killed deer with one shot.

recoil is no problem with either, my wife shoots them at the range as well with no complaints from her, except to say theyre heavy.

Which ever you can pick up cheapest you will be happy with. And I can almost guarantee you won't notice a difference in the holes in the paper target or the deer.
