Help on .380 purchase.

$250? Go for one of the eastern european brands. Be warned though that the triggers on these models are too hard to pull for accuracy. They all need a little American know-how from a good smith. This work though would exceed your budget. Perhaps it's better to save some money and go for a Kahr.

Arlander,

The AMT backup is junk, I have heard of many, many jams with this gun from Gunsmiths and Range masters. It is generally not reliable. Taurus makes (or use to make) a .22cal gun in the $250 range called the PT-22 with wood grips. It is a DAO gun holds 10 rounds and is very nice to shoot. I shot one last weekend and it was reliable and accurate. Again, skip over the .380 and get a .22 or go right to the 9mm. $250 will buy you much more in a .22, i.e. Ruger, Taurus, NAA, etc., than a 380ACP.

Craigz,

Point taken. What can I say, I love my .22 Beretta Model 87W Cheetah. I paid around $550 for it and purchased it on layaway. With $200 down, it took 3 months to pay off the balance. It was well worth the wait.

Regards,
Hann

Hey everyone thanks for the responses. After all the replies on the Bersa I went ahead and ordered one today. I got the nickel finish Thunder for $210 (that included the shipping cost for the dealer.) Everyone has been really helpful. And yes I'll be saving up when possible for maybe that Taurus .22
Again thanks for all the info.

Buy the Makarov.

Much better made then those "budget" 380's,
shoots more powerfull ammo (9x18) and will cost you twice less then your bydget set.
For 250 you will buy a Mak and a case of ammo!

Sensop, I live in PA, and when I bought my Bersa this past march I only paid $189 NIB. What part of PA was selling them for $270?

Arlander,
I own one of the original AMT .380 backups from 1978. If the current ones are anything like the original ones, STAY AWAY! Inaccurate, extremely heavy recoil for a little .380, jambs a lot, and you have to remove drift pins just to break it down to clean.

I have to agree with others that the best quality gun in your size and price range is the Makarov. If you're willing to spend an hour or two thoroughly cleaning off the packing grease, you can get a new, unfired, Bulgarian Military Surplus Makarov at www.jcarmory.com for around $145.00. Add Pierce grips and a case of 9x18 ammo, and you're still around $250.00.

I love my little Mak, and highly recommend it to anyone on a budget. It's also a blast watching the faces of your Liberal friends when you tell them you own an original Soviet Military Sidearm. ;)

If you wish to learn more about Maks, go to www.makarov.com

Good Luck,
David

I have the sweetest shooting Daewoo 380 in that price range (imported by Kimber). Of course the Mak rocks! More powerful then the .380, cheaper to buy and feed, if you feed it the russian fodder. Of the 5 .380's I have owned or still own, the Daewoo ranks at the top of the list in all categories except hideability, which belongs to the colts.
