I've had a Ruger and a Smith. I now am happy with a Dan Wesson. I bought it with an 8" barrel and recently picked up a new 4" barrel for $100. I use the 4" with .44 special silvertips for home defense, and use the 8" for hunting. I love it. (I loved the others too! The DW is just more versatile.)

Dan Wesson Model 44 because I prefer blue, 744 if your into stainless.
Before you discount a DW based on cost, have your shop contact DW directly to get a quote for you. Last year I looked into ordering a 744 and the price my dealer quoted me was right in line with a S&W 629.
If you can track down a used, check www.ktpguns.com from time to time, you can usually get it for a very reasonable price. Due to cost of ammo and recoil most used .44 Mag revolvers are not fired a whole lot.

I will agree that the Ruger Redhawks are Butt Ugly! But will not doubt their strenght for a second. I think if you really wanted to scope a pistol a redhawk/Super RH would be a better platform.

Im after a S&W 629 myself, but want a smaller package, 3" for backpacking. I love smiths but im not so wild about scoping them. Unless the barrel is longer.

Dan Wessons to me feel funny cuz there is nothing in the grip for weight, they feel nose heavy to me. I had a .357 DW and sold it due to it just not feeling right.

Taurus...heh

Play with em all, look up informatin on them and make an informed decision. Doing your own homework ends in the perfect choice. Your the only one who knows what your looking for in a pistol.

Would you rather have a "pretty" gun with a really "sweet" trigger...?

OR

Would you rather have a "Butt Ugly" gun with a "rough" trigger...?

WHEN THE MEANEST AMMUNITION YOU CAN LOAD INTO THE GUN GOES 'BANG'...

OR

'how 'bout the first gun detonating in your hand  --- because it can't handle the SUPER DUPER AMMUNITION...?

Ruger Redhawk.
"It's a MAN'S gun." :p ;)

The Smith&Wesson firearms will do just fine, too.
Don't get me wrong, I'm having fun.
The Ruger is a might bit more capable, though...
