Help, My 2 tone SIG is pealing?

I bought a new Sig 229 2 tone 9mm yesterday, and shot it for the first time today. When I got back home to clean it, I noticed the inside of the slide rails and a few other friction points on the slide were pealing. I took it apart to lube and inspect it last night and there was no pealing. Its not wearing, but pealing and looks like an old car bumper. I thought the slide was stainless, but it looks like it has a matte nickle coating thats bubled up and flaking off on the friction points. I only fired 150 rounds of mild UMC's. Is this normal? Should I send it back to SIG?
THX,
Jason

Hi, Jason,

If the gun is really new (and not just new to you), I would definitely send it back to Sig through your dealer. If used, I would contact Sig first and make sure they will take care of it without a major charge.

FWIW, nickel plating often peels if an ammonia type cleaner (like Hoppe's No. 9) has been used on it. Nickel will not plate directly to steel, so they use a copper plating first. Ammonia does not attack nickel directly, but it is this undercladding that ammonia will attack if it can, and leave the nickel unsupported and peeling.

It is indead brand new. When I first got home with it Saturday I field striped it to remove the factory lube and foiling from test fireing and to make sure everything is in working order...as is my normal pracice with all new additions. There was no evidence of pealing or bubbeling. I cleaned the barrel with M-Pro 7, lubed it with a little bit of Wilson grease and Wilson Ultima-Lube. Non of that contains ammonia to my knowledge. I'm not really sure its nickle plated (could someone inform me). The slide is marked stainless, but why would stainless peal? I was just assuming it was nickle over stainless because the color has a very soft lavender tint, like nickle/copper.

Looks like bubbling and peeling.

I have a stock P229 with 4000+ rounds that shows less wear than that. Maybe it was not cleaned properly before it was plated? I would ask for a new slide.

Normal wear is bubbles, chips and flakes the size of fingernail clipings? And after only 150 rounds? I have never had that happen with other handguns, only old rusted car bumpers. Besides, the frame shows NO visable wear.

I'd definately send Sig an e-mail with copies of your pictures. Since the slide is stainless, I wonder if they will say that the finish wear will not effect normal function of the pistol? Please post what Sig tells you.

ANyone know SIg's e-mail address. I looked on their webpage but only found e-mail addresses for SIG academy, product info and such. Couldnt find one for the service/repair department.

Doesn't look to me like peeling plating. More like galling and spalling stainless. Possibly from usin non compatable lube. Talkin to Sig should shed much light on this.

Please keep us posted.

Sam

I ran a dry q-tip down the slide rails, the resulting chips are pictured below. What is the slide plated with?
BTW, I have used the same lube (Wilson Ultima grease and oil) on other stainless guns without galling

This is "normal wear" on a Glock breechface.

FWIW because you asked. The 2 tone Sigs are indeed Nickle plated. The Stainless on the slide only representsthat it is a milled slide made in America from Stainless steel, not the finish.

I never experienced this problem with my two-tone
Sig P226 in 9m/m; as it was beautifully finished, and
remained that way even after continous use.

No kidding Sam..that seemed pretty ignorant to me too, But the nickle does give it a very pleasing pewter finish. But since they were going to plate it, why not just mill it out of lighter, less expensive carbon steal?

Wait a minute. Split hairs over which lube to use? Sorry no in this man's arsenal. I like nothing more than sloshing a well-soaked toothbrush with Hoppe's 9 on the slide. Send that puppy to Mac's Shootin Iron www.shootiniron.com and get a lifetime guarantee.

I love SIGs. I really do. I love my P220. But some days it just seems like SIG has no understanding of finishing metal.

This can't be normal. Contact SIG and see what they say. I would venture to guess that they'll want the slide back and furnish another. Even Hoppes wouldn't peel the Nickel after one cleaning, would it?

BTW, it's also a very bad sign if your gun is "pealing." The only sounds it should make are clicks, clacks, and the occasional bang. ;)
