I second your choice of the G17. The 9mm is easier on the wallet and easier to reload. The Glock kaBoom stories almost always involve reloaded ammo using lead bullets, and some with jacketed bullets. The biggest cause of these problems is the unsupported case. This causes a bulge in the case that weakens the brass. Then again, I have only heard the stories, never have seen one.
The .40 S&W could more accurately thought of as a 10mm Kurtz (Short). The FBI 10mm Lite loads and the .40S&W loadings have nearly identical ballistic characteristics. You can make .40 S&W brass by trimming 10mm brass to the proper length and reaming the case mouth. (I don't know why anyone would, just that it can be done that way. There are a myriad of details not described here, as this is not the point.)

May your lead always hit center mass and your brass always land in your range bag.
