Help me pick my magazine fed light rifle.

Art,
I have moderate experience with .22 target practice years ago. When I get this gun it will be under the auspices of home defense if needed. In reality, it will be locked in the safe and inaccessible should a need really arise. What it comes down to in reality is this is something I have always just "wanted" but could not justify spending money on because I know there will never be a ROI. I'm tired of being practical so I'm going to get what I want just because I want it.

"That said, I expect flawless performance each and every time"

"I want functional, utilitarian and reliable."

"I can take right out of the box and be ready to go with any of the recommended accessories, bells, whistles, etc. already professionally installed. I don't want to play gunsmith making a project gun by buying various pieces that I have to assemble on my own. I want a fully assembled, well crafted, complete unit that is ready to go."

Let me just say I love my ARs but they require more attention than AKs; just a fact of life. I have two ARs that have thousands of rounds through them with 0 failures of any kind but I'm a nut about cleaning and proper lubrication. If you just want to pull it out of the gun case, have some fun, and want 0 issues -- that just screams AK. The version above has quad rails alreay installed so you can slap optics/lights/ect on it.

Here's my SGL21:

I'd add an M1A to the list, in it's socom config from Springfield, it can have a bit added to it with no gunsmith needed.

Or the loaded M1A:

It certainly is reliable, for me. I think I've had feed issues when using new 25 round mags, but once broken in (use the mag 5-10 times and it's fine) I suffer no further feed issues. Never had a misfire, slamfire, failure to extract or failure to feed/return to battery (again, when using non-new mags.) It's an old design that's proven, and a lot of gunsmiths are able to do work, if it is needed down the line. (and if you want something like the barrel threaded, or a new barrel put on, I'd recommend contacting SEI or Springfield.)

Further, if you DO feel like turning it into a project at some later point, you can do something like changing the stock. Here's what I did with my standard M1A:

How about a Kel Tec? They also have models in hand gun calibers. That might be an alternative.

My choice was this. Will be waiting a month for it.

But using your lines of:

I want functional, utilitarian and reliable

I'm looking for middle ground in all areas. I also want a weapon for which ammo is readily available and in caliber that has significant knock down.

It sounds like you are looking for something like this with a nice optic added to it and 1k rounds of ammo and still be under $1,500
