Help me pick a .45 jhp round

I know about feed reliability. I want to pick the bullet I want then try them if they are good to go thats what I will keep. I already have 500 rounds of ranger T and 500 rounds of 185 +p hydra shok. I got them delivered this week. (and yes both work well in the XDM) I still want a jhp that does maximum penetration. I got the Ranger T for maximum expansion. I really wanted HST but they are no where to be found. The next best round for expansion was the Ranger T. I got the hydrashok because they were a good deal. Both of these only average about 12.5 inches in gel:(

I still am looking for a deep penetrator (at least 14.5") and actualy expand to at leasat .65. I have thought about the doubletap. but not alot of data nor history supporting that rounds abilities.

IF you know of something that penetrates deeper than a 230 grain XTP let me know.

If the rounds you have already purchased are reliable in your gun then you're GTG. Do you really think someone is going to soak up a few of either of them and ask for more?

Ranger Ts are excellent. The Hydra-Shoks are a proven defense round. They may not be the absolute best out there, but they are very good. Eventually, the HSTs will become available and you can try them. Until then, I would be very satisfied in knowing that I have two proven hollow point designs to feed my 1911.

In my case, I have several 1911s that I have only one proven hollow point. Why? Because I don't want to spend half a zillion dollars proving a dozen different designs through a dozen different guns. Eventually, I'll probably try a different design though a couple of my 1911s but I'm in no hurry and I certainly don't obsess about it.

I have the XDM not a 1911. So far it feeds everything. I am sure it will continue to do so.

Why wont federal just stop selling hydrashok and start producing more HST?

230 grin jhp of your choice. Across the board the .45 is no ballistic powerhouse, it's slow and lumbering but it does hit hard and get the job done, obviously.

It's a matter of trying a mag or three of a few different brands and which brand your pistol likes and groups best.

I'd start here - Winchester PDX, Federal Hydrashok or HST, Speer Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, and PMC Starfire. If the Starfire performs well go for it as it can be had a bit cheaper than the others and I've always found PMC ammo to be quite legit. The XD and probably the XD-M will not have much of a problem feeding anything that I know of.

CorBon makes a 230 gr. +p load that's probably nasty but +p is foreign territory to me.

I'm just quoting tipoc's post. It says it all and Super Dave should read it again and then move on to some other subject....:)

Dave,

With all respect you can make yourself crazy with this stuff. In the last week you've asked a number of questions, which ain't bad in and of itself, but some are kinda related and minute.

Any decent 45 ammo from a reputable manufacturer will work well. On line you can look up the figures for velocity, energy, expansion in 10 ballistic gelatin and expansion in the same etc.

The figures may show that one type ammo from Federal penetrates 1" deeper than one load from Hornady. Or that, on paper, one expands .030" wider. On company may have tested their ammo from a 5" test barrel while another tested from an actual gun. What they cannot tell you is how they will work from your guns.

Which ammo is more accurate from your guns? Which feeds better? Which is dependable from your guns and has no light primer strike? etc. Only you can answer these questions. Trying to get those answers is part of the fun of shooting.
