OK folks pics are coming as soon as they finish uploading to photo bucket. I removed the stock and didn't find a whole lot but maybe some of you Mauser gurus can help. Unfortunately the large crests have been refinished to the point they are gone or they have been removed. Who knows. Again pics are coming very soon.

The only "crest" of any sort. Looks kinda like a shield think that's a numeral 7 there are other things in there can't make them out

This appears to be a lower case A. Just forward of the receiver where the barrel mates up. Just behind the little crest.

The numbers 6846 are on the side of the barrel about middle to forward end of chamber. To the best of my knowledge that's what they read. OK anxiously awaiting!! Thanks

Possibly a Yugo?

Could it be a Yugo M48-BO? They were made only for export, and therefore only have a few proof markings and a serial number. Does the hand guard extend past the rear sight? If so, you probably have a Yugo Mauser

Zbones this Mauser has been sporterized. And pretty easy to tell its been refinished. And re blueing is awful hard on stampings. It is a 98 by the way.

Sorry obviously its a 98 the 48 threw me off. Just looked it up. I'm not sure at all what it is. Could be a 48 bo. Very few marks.

The identifying crest would be atop the front receiver ring, under the scope mount base.

The remainder are mostly just inspection/inspector's marks.

If this means anything...

Removed the scope and bases. No crest but what appeared to be remnants of the numeral 5 then the tapped hole which I'm sure killed a number or letter and directly right of that the letter Z and numeral 4 and 5. So.....5_Z45. Anything...anybody?

long action ? or intermediate action ?
Long action 98 is 7-7/8" action screws and intermediate(Yugoslavian) is 7-5/8".
Long action could be one of a dozen countries, but intermediate is Yugoslavian only to my knowledge.
I have both and can verify the difference in length.
the one in the middle is the long action.

center to center of the action (trigger guard) screws, the ones that go through the stock and hold the guard to the action.

IMO, the "Z45" would indicate the receiver was made in 1945 - the end of WWII, when not many Euro gun factories were left standing by the Allies, let alone making German military rifle.

My WAG is that it was originally a Czech K98k or a Turk 98, that's been sanitized (or never stamped with a crest).
