I'm planning to get my first handgun (probably 9mm), to be used mainly for home defense and occasional (but infrequent) carry. This will probably be my only handgun. Basically, I'm looking for something simple, reliable and compact. So far, I've narrowed my choices down to the following, and have some general impressions of each based on my reading thus far:

GLOCK 19 - reliable, indestructable, low maintenance, good customer service. Lack of external safeties and a decocker may add risk.
GLOCK 26 - more concealment options at the sacrifice of a little accuracy and secureness of grip.
USP COMPACT - German quality and reliability. Slightly more accurate than Glock. More complex design than Glock, which may mean more maintenance and chance of malfunction. More expensive. Poor customer service.
SIG P239 - The main contender to the G19. External safeties and decocker is an advantage. More complex design gives a slight the edge to Glock.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the G26, but I haven't shot any of them yet (I plan to later this week). They all felt good in my hand at the store, though.

Any comments from you experts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This will probably be my only handgun.
Yeah, well good luck on that one:D .

I don't own a GLOCK, so I can't comment on them.

The USP compact is a great handgun. Despite it being more complex, I'd put it on par with the GLOCKs for reliability. Maintenance will NOT be more than the GLOCK.

As far as H&Ks customer service is concerned, I've dealt with them several times and have had very good results as have several friends. I guess it depends on who you ask, but all of my experiences have been positive.

I'd buy the one you like the best since there will be no overwhelming reason to buy one or the other. Shoot them all if you can. Usually a clear favorite will emerge after having shot them.

Almost forgot to add, availability and price of standard capacity magazines may tip the scales toward the GLOCK 19 (although I would still choose the one you are most comfortable with).

I don't own a Glock either, and I can't get comfortable with the mag release (leftie) and I'm not crazy about the grip angle... *BUT*

I voted Glock 19

Since this is your first one, you'll be learning whatever grip angle you start with. I started with a Taurus, then to an HK, so I'm ruined on that grip angle for life....

If Home Defense is it's main function, I'd prefer the 19 over the 26 for the extra grip, sight radius, comfort in hand, possible higher capacity, and if you only carry occasionally, you can easily dress around the 19 so that it's no problem to carry at all.

My second choice would be the USP, but with that much extra weight, you're losing a little "totability".

Sig P239, I have no input on, although, if they weren't so DARNED heavy, I'd have one by now.

Glock 26, I already stated my position on that.

Mostly, I'd base my decision on comfort and confidence. There are no lemons in your list, so you can't go wrong with the one that makes you most happy.

I know very few who have been able to stick to those words..."I'm only getting one!"
That said...I would get the USP 1st. Learn all you can about shooting handguns and start you collection with a high quality firearm. Shoot alot of rounds through it and have fun while you're at it! ;)

Which One ?

I had to throw my vote for the 26. I have the 27 and love it ;)
Never owned a Glock before I owned the 27. I don't think your going to lose if you go with the 26 :)

mark since this is your first (& maybe only) handgun dom't limit your choices. Go out to a range & shoot a variety for yourself & see which ones work for you. Personally I shoot my Glock better than my H&K. I have complete confidence in either one. I know if I keep my finger off the trigger the Glock will never go off. I had an Astra (of all pistols) that fit my hand perfect, pointed perfectly, & I could put double taps witihn about a quarter sized circle. Good luck with your choice & stay safe.

From what I have seen at our local IDPA shoots any of them are very reliable. You just need to sort through the various features of the different ones. I've shot all of them but if you want a vote mine's for sig. I own a 239 & love it. Before that pistol I was a revolver-or-nothin' type of guy.
The guys at the gun range where I practice found out I was considering a semi, the all lined up to let me shoot thiers and every one the range had to rent. We had a ball!!!! But the reason I bought the sig was: With my grip and the way I sight, that thing was intstantly shooting point of aim. Others there had different experiences.

Moral of the story:
See if you can find somewhere and shoot them all at the same time, then you won't get one that doesn't work for YOU!

Handgun selection

Everyone has his or her opinion, I like all of the pistols you listed above, but I would have to say that you have narrowed it down to a few great pistols. Personally, I would choose the H&K. I personally own one of the USP Compact models. I like this pistol for a few reasons. I have found that it is very easy to carry on the hip without being cumbersome. It has a no snag bobbed hammer. Has large thumb safety and decock. The pistol is VERY accurate and very low recoil. Most of all, you can just about walk into any gun shop and find aftermarket parts , ie. holsters, sights and so on. Yes the H&K pistols are a bit more in price , but you get what you pay for. Since you say you are not going to use the pistol primarily for home defense, you may want a lower price pistol. If you have not looked at Taurus' line of pistols. I also own one of those too. You can pick up a new Taurus with LIFETIME warranty for under $400. I have a PT-911 , its small, accurate, compact and rugged. They make a good pistol. If you do look at a Taurus, look at the Millenium edition model. No matter what you pick, enjoy it, be safe, and have fun!

All excellent choices. I like the Glocks because of the single trigger weight. If you think concealed carry is in your future go for the Glock 26. I have a 33 and it conceals beautifully.

FYI - Sigs have no external safety, just a decocker.

I too like all your choices. If you like German guns, have you thought about a Walther P99? Out of your choices, I'd go for the HK or Glock. Both are simple to use and reliable and durable. The Sig would also be a great choice.

For something simpler, have you thought about a .357 mag. revolver?

P99

Greeting's All,

Being a fan of Sig's, I voted for the Glock 19.
Very nice feel, compact, and utterly reliable;
with little or no maintenance required.

The Glock 26 is arguably the best pistol for concealed carry in the world, and mine especally. Outfitted with Trijicon night sights, Pierce mag extensions, and the piece de resistance, the 3.5lb connector, and reduced power trigger spring. This is THE best CCW weapon on the planet!!! Fast on target, light on trigger, legendary G26 accuracy, accepting 17 round G17, or 15 round G19 mags, and loaded with Federal 115gr Hydro- Shoks, it's bye, bye Bad Guy!!!!!! :)

Glock 26: 17 rounds of concealed carry DEATH commin' at ya from outta nowhere!!! THAT'S FIREPOWER, BABY!!!:D

I myself carry the SIG 239. I voted for the Glock 19. Out of that list, the 19 is the closest to an ideal "all-purpose" home defense, occasional carry gun there. Standard cap mags are readily available. It's a little bigger than the 26 or the SIG, but it's still easily concealable - I used to carry a 19. Been thinking 'bout picking another up sometime soon, even.

Go with the Glock hands down! Prior to purchasing, I didn't like how it didn't have an external safety, however, after looking at various other firearms, including Beretta and HK, I came back to the Glock G30 .45. Not having an external safety has taught me to check the chamber repeatedly, before putting it away, when taking it out, and prior to showing to anyone. If you are responsible, not having an external safety shouldn't be a problem. However, if you have little ones around, keeping any gun locked up is of utmost importance. I hope this helped.

Don't get a sig p229 in 9mm. This gun has a stainless slide and stainless frame. It was built for the .40SW and .357Sig calibers.

The real sig to choose for 9mm compact is the p228. This one has a better balance and in my opinion it's superior to the 229 in 9mm. You should drop the 229 9mm from your list and add the 228 instead.

I voted for the GLOCK. In a compact 9mm, I haven't found anything better than the G19. 15 rounds in a pistol that size is unmatched by any other, even the Walther P99.

I vote Sig P239. It just shoots the best in my hand. I don't have XL hands, but my hands are "too big" for the grip of the P239. However, it really does come into play while shooting. The Sig feels more natural to me than the Glock. I don't much care for the mini-Glocks, and the lack of a home for my pinky finger bugs the crap out of me. My brother on the other hand prefers the mini-Glocks to my P239 - so what can I say? Again, either will work great, it's just up to you as far as what feels best, shoots best, and looks best in your hand and to your eye.

Strictly personal opinion as all are the first choice for some. For me the H&K USP Compact comes in first due to perfect ergonomics and quality. The Glock 19 comes in a close second and may be a little better for CCW being smaller. Shoots exceptionally well.
I find the Glock 26 to be a less than perfect fit for my large hands and I'm not a fan of the wide handgrip. The Sig P239 is also exceptional, but the handgrip just doesn't fit me (or my hand doesn't fit it). May seem a little top heavy as well.
