Help me choose an AR-15

Thanks for the input, all. I spent the weekend reading (thanks, dz). The Maryland AR site was especially helpful.

Overall, sounds like spending extra for a pre-ban gun isn't cost effective for what I'm looking for. The AR15.com LEGP looks pretty good, but I'll have to check it out a bit more before making a final decision. Think I'd rather have an A2 stock instead of the fake collapsing stock . . .

Keep it simple

I think Older Colts and Olys were very good, now I think BM rules the AR market for buy and walk. Depending on what your mind set is, and what your wants are. Find a good gun smith and have him custom build a weapon for you. There is a local guy here that does a fantastic job building weapons, and he's reasonable. He builds for the local LEO's.
These weapons are preference weapons, so what do you want?
I have a BM AR carbine with an AK break......It does great for a carbine. For accuracy I have an Oly international match......5 rounds in 1 sq inch at 200 yards.
Now if your a SHTF dude, you'll get a pre ban carbine with all the super stuff on it. Target shooters, then a flat top with a good scope.
I think pre bans are a waste of time unless you have money to burn. I don't think anyone will live to see a revolution in this country, so these super assault weapons are a preference weapon.
If you just want to shoot for the fun of it, get your self a BM 20 inch barrel, 1/9 twist with target sights. Mount a scope of your choice, if you want one. Don't worry you can always modify it later if you want.
good luck

Legionnaire,

If you are seriously considering the AR15.COM LEGP, don't wait too long. I think the price is only good until sometime late this month. FWIW, you can probably find a standard stock at a good price, since a number of people have them in their closets. :)

Well . . . think I'm going to forego the AR15.com rifle for a couple of reasons. $660 sounds like a good deal, but my FFL says he can get me a Bushmaster XM15 E2S Shorty A3 16 for $775. For the additional $115, I get the A2 stock (don't have any use for a "fixed telestock"), the A3 carry handle (a $95 addition to the LEGP's base price), and a chromed bore and chamber. Haven't made up my mind completely yet (may wait until after the gun show in a couple of weeks), but it doesn't seem like the LEGP is a "gotta have it" deal . . . at least for me.

Appreciate the continued input. I'm getting smarter by the minute! :D

Hmmm...your calculator is off.

"...your $440 parts guns and the $400 you had to pay to get it complete is still a $440.00 parts gun to most of us." -- Karsten

What do you mean?

The kit from J&T Distributing is complete except for the stripped lower...parts package, buttstock assembly, pistol grip, everything you need to complete the rifle. The upper comes completely assembled. Even if you pay a gunsmith to assemble the lower for you and paid $150 for the stripped lower, you have a fine rifle for $640 and you know exactly how your rifle works.

Where's the extra $200 in your calculation?

One correction from above: J&T use Wilson match barrels which they cut themselves; and they assemble the upper, not the companies which mfr. the parts. That's how they are able to offer such great variety and deliver so quickly. Great folks to deal with, too.

Thanks for all the input. I've done a lot of research since starting this thread, and have talked with a bunch of people. Turns out, my wife (bless her) pointed out that if I didn't buy a pre-ban Colt I'd not be happy. So I have a NIB, preban Colt Match Sporter HBAR on the way. Range report to follow when it arrives. 'Course if Karsten is right, once the first one's in the safe, there will be more to follow . . .

Congrats on the purchase! I have a colt pre-ban. I put a Bushmaster Disip. upper on it and love it. You will like any AR.
Now, what will be your next AR?

Next AR? First thing will be an M4 upper with 16" barrel and a flat top to play with on the Colt. Then prolly a "kit" gun built up around a Bushmaster stripped lower . . . kind of a project gun. At least, that's what I'm thinking this evening!
