help me choose a shotgun..

If you want for looks and not hunting, a SPAS 12 or 15 are nifty looking. Not sure how legal but they look cool.

Remington 870 has a lot you can do with it but so does the mossberg 500. Never shot the smoothbore version but I have a 500 slug gun. I own my youth model 870 20 ga and my dad still likes it as a brush gun. My dad uses a 12 ga remington 870 with a synthetic black stock but that's the only special thing about it.

I like my century arms centurian o/u. Nothing really exotic about it but I like the semi-auto like feature of the O/U vs the two trigger S/S as well as over a three shot pump. Only need two shots anyway usually if the ducks are high.

If you want really exotic and money isn't a problem and you can get it legally

Full auto capable and the mags double as claymores :D although they come preloaded and cannot be reloaded (i think. will have to look again)

miscusi

I am not picking on you - honestly.
I am a 51 almost 52 year old "relic" as some would call me - well I am called other names, just Rich and Staff would not appreciate me typing such names . ;)

Here is my deal. TFL was set up to promote Responsible Firearm Ownership.
Rich, Staff, myself and everyone else that is a member of TFL agreed to this upon registering to be a member of TFL . All anyone has to do is click the Rules of Conduct in the upper right to see. One will also find TFL's Mission Statement.

I know there are Fence Sitters and Anti-Gun Folks that read TFL . Some even are registered as members!

I have no problem with folks collecting guns. I have no problem with folks wanting and possessing a gun for simply "cool factor" , or "gee whiz" factor.

I do concern myself as to what message one sends out to Fence Sitters,
Anti-Gun and even other Responsible Firearm Owners - including kids.

See the deal is - a kid questioned this thread.
I hang with a tight bunch of folks that consist of single ladies, single moms, some parents and grandparents.
This kid is one that is learning , being Mentored by folks like myself and Parented by the single mom. Summer was this kids most "funnest" - as they shot a .22 single shot rifle. They got their very own .22 single shot rifle, safety eyes and ears and "it was really really cool and fun!"

Rights? Yep we sure do have these. Being Responsible - Yep, we are to do that too.

Kid is reading the monitor with me, and not yet big enough to do shotguns - still likes shotguns , learning about them (pattern boards, chokes, shot strings...etc., and I/we read Brister's book to the kid).

Is it being responsible to just to have Iwannacoolgunvirus ? This kid asked me.

Okay - now being the responsible firearm owner adult with a kid reading TFL with me - I gotta Mentor - correct?
I gotta a kid looking at me and then reminding me of the various things I have said to them, in front of them to others about Responsible Firearm Ownership.

"You said folks are representatives [ambassadors] in the way they carry themselves in how they act, what they say and what they type on Internet.
I am not sure a Fence Sitter would come to our side and maybe even a Anti would use this stuff against us?" - this kid.

miscusi, I want the Fence Sitters to understand how I and perhaps I as a member of TFL feel about being Reponsible with Firearms and getting started off on the right foot with Safety, Correct Basic Fundamentals, and having fun.

I DO NOT want Anti-Gun folks to take this thread - or any other thread on TFL, THR or any gun forum and use against Responsible Firearm Owner.

Now I apologize to you, TFL, Staff and Members if I offended you.

Heck, I will report myself to the Staff after I submit this.

See the deal is, while TFL is where I started out in Gun Forums, while I have a lot of friends here, and would like to stay a member to continue interacting with them, and to continue passing forward to new folks I meet...

If ONE Fence sitter comes to our side.
If ONE Anti-Gunner gets mad and cannot use this thread against "us" - then:

If Rich, or a TFL Staff bans me then it is worth it to me.
Dead Serious.

I have to be selfish in some things in order to give them away. If I do not take care of me - I cannot be there for someone else - like this kid.

I am being selfish in preferring to have Fence Sitters and Anti-Gun folks KNOW where and how I stand on a person picking out a shotgun, and being responsible with it.

"You said good shooters spend more money on ammunition , lessons and / or training than they do the gun itself? " - this kid.

Yes I did, and I believe this.

I have seen too many gun failures on the range with a gun in the first 50 rounds, many are operator error which is only overcome by training and practice. Other failures result from the chamber not being cleaned, extractor not being cleaned, improper re-assembly, after market add-ons impeding the action, improper ammunition for the firearm.

Recommended is 200 round of ammunition tested before using for serious use. be it HD or clay competitions, taking a training class with it, 3 gun ...etc.

This includes pattern board work / shooting for groups with slugs.

--

I care. It is my responsibly to care.
I know of too many folks that were turned off of shotguns, firearms, RKBA and being Pro-Gun because someone handed them a shotgun, with heavy recoil loads and laughed when it kicked them hard and hurt them.

No. Not on my watch it will not happen!

I am willing to put my membership to TFL on the line right here and now to let
Responsible Firearm Owners, Fences Sitters and Anti-Gunner know exactly where I stand.

miscusi, again I apologize to you.

Rich , Staff, and members of TFL I apologize to you as well.

Regards,

Steve

Ooohs & Ahhhs

I get the most of them when I pull the Ithaca/SKB 200E out of the safe. Hardly inexpensive, but quality never is.

Be aware that you might not even be allowed to use a tactical-style shottie on some trap and skeet ranges, and you'll probably be laughed off. The "Ooh & Ahh" factor might work with your drinking buddies, but not with serious clay shooters. :(

SM, I have no clue what you are saying sorry for, did you have one beer too many ? ;)

as for

"use a tactical-style shottie on some trap and skeet ranges, and you'll probably be laughed off"

Thats fine. I dont think I will ever do trap nor skeet,

I went to a local dealer, called "NY IRONWORKS" on park row. On the shelf was a 870 EXPRESS 5+1.... $499.00

That is utter crap. DONT GO THERE ! THEY WANNA RIP U OFF.

the " SPAS 12 or 15 are nifty looking" that isnt the look I'm thinking off, although uniqe never the less

Get the maverick 88 security. I have a maverick 88 and a mossberg 500a, the only difference is the forend (the mossberg can take aftermarket forward pistol grips and stuff, but the maverick can not.) and the location of the safety. Also, the maverick's reciever has a different finish, but they are otherwise identical guns, with identical parts.

You can get stuff from ATI, it will work as advertised. As long as you don't expect more than what it can realistically be (i.e. the ghost ring sights on the heatshield are going to be almost useless, however the heatshield will probably be okay as it's onlt a piece of insulation).

I have 2 ATI stocks: One on my 10/22 and one on my SKS. They are just fine, and they look great. They could me made a little better, but they could also be more expensive. I can work around the gun to an extent, and I do not need it to feel like a lay-Z-boy for my face to really enjoy shooting it.

If you want tactical stuff on the cheap, then ATI is your friend. Oh, and if you want to shoot skeet with it later (it's actually pretty fun) you won't get laughed off the range. Most guys seem to enjoy some variety on the range. I am usually complimented on my skeet gun. Also, nobody was laughing at me when my squad took 1st place in the Oklahoma state skeet tournament, senior experienced division. I was using a mossberg 500a 18.5" barrel (Incredibly talented squad members helped too).

So yeah, get a mossberg or maverick and hang all of the plastic grips, lights, heatshields, and lasers you want on it. It's your gun afterall and you have the right to play rambo all you want so long as you don't do anything illegal.

Have fun.

The Winchester 1300 is not dead. Take a long hard look at the FN Police shotgun, different name, same shot gun. It has mutated though.:D

you want something "cool" and affordable? win 97 clone with slam-fire would be a badazz show gun. Sure its made in china and such but still they are cheap, classic and only shooters will know the difference between a clone and the original. As far as what ive scene from mossberg i am very impressed with their guns too as i own 2 and my folks own 2. Also a friend of mine owns one from the early 80's and says it was the first to chamber 3", or one of the first. My 835 is a damn good gun, but its retired to turkey hunting and home defense duty since my silver reserve has been a flawless trap gun. Still i got nothing against 870's reputation, i just dont like the fit and feel of the guns.

I saw the thread and was going to recommend an 870 for starters.

Then I see that you watch too much CSI, and want to play cowboy.
I have been a Minnesota Certified Firearms Safety Instructor for 33yrs, and agree totally with SM.

I have seen pretty much of everything, and have met a lot of different types of people.
Don't take me wrong, but with the type of "gun" you are looking at, I think that you are getting in WAY over you head on this.

Get a nice little 20ga 870 Youth Shotgun, and start with that.
It will be just fine for home defense, and you can use it for trap and skeet until you follow SM's advise, and take some firearms safety courses.

Keep cool, have fun, be safe, and DON'T try to impress anybody.;)

Eric
