You got the crate, didn't it come with a can opener?
NO!
;)

ЛПС LPS Light ball steel core silver tip/none 1953-1991

Its the only one marked as silver tip but I can find the marking ЛПС for that on the crate or cans.
the cans and box were marked the same.

Dissembled the gun today and I am happy to report that there is NO rust anywhere on the gun.
This was the first time I could get a good look at the barrel and I was very disappointed in the condition. There appeared to be a lot more pitting than I original thought.
So I started cleaning. Brush, boor butter. Soak it with solvent let it set and brush and then patch after patch. And then repeat.
On cycle number 10 (not kidding) 3 hours later. The patch finally came out clean. I am happy to say that the barrel is shinny and has very sharp lands. I have no idea what was in the barrel but it was thick and crumbly almost like coal but harder.

Ozzieman you should have started out by flushing the barrel with either carb cleaner, or brake parts cleaner. Quickly followed by a few oiled patches.

Cosmoline is thick greasy stuff. Not sure what it is like if it is dried out. I do know it is highly effective for a metal preservative. What ever degreaser that you use make sure you quickly oil it. Once all oils are stripped from the metal it can start rusting in minutes.

For cleaning after you shoot that ammo take a bottle of water with the squirt tip on it. Remove the bolt when you get done shooting. Pour the water down the bore. Run a couple of patches with the supplied cleaning rod. Then run an oiled patch. Then a couple of dried patches. Ten minutes or less start to finish.

First time at the range

either carb cleaner, or brake parts cleaner.
I would have but since I have to do it in the house I can’t (wife).
Well took it out for the first time today.
First group was at 50 yards and lousy,,
Got used to the trigger and started getting good groups so I went out to 100. Now this was on bags and not offhand but I’m happy with this gun. I actually out shot my Grand that I took along. Photo 82 is the completed gun. 97 is the final target 15 rounds. I shot a total of 120 and had fun.
The trigger is heavy but has a clean break. Bolt is very smooth but requires some pressure to close. Sights are marginal but usable, I would really like this thing with a set of rear peep sights.
For the way this thing shoots it is by far the least money I have ever spent on a gun.
Thanks every one for the help.
Now all I need is a nice K98

Just a quick comment because of something you posted in another thread.

That ammo is corrosive. Clean accordingly.

Anything military ammo from the former Warsaw pact is going to be corrosive. The new commercial stuff is not (Tula, etc), but military stuff is.
