Help me buy a 10mm!

Bar none - the Glock 20 is the most versatile 10mm out there.

Can shoot 10mm, 357 sig, and 40SW from that platform. And you can get a 6" hunting barrel to hunt deer and hogs with the Glock 20.

Can't accessorize any other 10mm like the G20!

Otherwise, get the SW 610 revolver. Can load load some hot 10mm rounds for hunting and long range target shooting. Load some Lasercast 170 LSWCs for fun target work too or some 200 grain JHPs doing 1200 fps for Bambi!

The SW 1076 is a nice autoloader but you won';t be able to shoot many hot loads with its hard plastic backstrap. Sturdy though. Still carried by dozens of state and federal LEOs.

Pass on the Colt. Traitors! And the frames were cracking. Sorry but the 1911 was designed for a low pressure round and 10mm just will beat you up after 200 rounds with that thin 10mm frame.

The EAA Witness is a decent second 10mm but has had its problems.

I have a G20 with all of the above barrels and a 6.5" 610 Classic.

Glock 20 -- Readily available long barrel for more oomph and conversions give it variety. Of course you won't need the conversions since the 10mm is best anyway.

respectfully disagree, the weight soaks up most of the recoil, the 1076 is a pussycat compared to the Glocks or 1911s, subjectively speaking

As a Glock fan, I'd say....

Get the Delta Elite!

I have a stainless model, no cracks, no problems. It does have a full length (stainless) recoil spring guide rod installed, and a S&A beavertail has been fit to the frame. It's accurate, comfortable and just plain "neat"! :D

I've had my Glock 20 since 1992 and am very pleased with it.

A lot of folks over at GlockTalk speak very highly of their Glock 29s, though. If you would ever want to use the 10mm for CCW, the G29 would be the way to go, IMO.

You can also get Hogue wood or rubber grips for any S&W 10XX series gun (they will even custom tailor them for the side-decocking models).

Andabeer is right, these guns have the wieght to really tame the 10mm. My 1006 is too big for comfy CCW (I do anyway), but because of the wieght, it shoots full power 10mm loads like a 9mm! (really :))

S&W auto's get a bad rap on these boards (in some cases, deservedly so), but their 10mm's get almost universal praise.

I always say "When the sh*# hits the fan, I'll have my 1006 in my hand."

10mm choices.

Got in late on this thread, but I have to agree with the comments on the G-20 and any Smith 10mm. (Check my Sig :) ).

FWIW, even "hot" loads at the original Norma 10mm specs don't generate "abusive" felt-recoil in my 1076. A Wolff 22lb recoil spring helps, plus you have a choice of a straight or arched backstrap - just pick whichever you feel best fits YOUR hand. As others have noted, the weight of the all-steel Smith 10mms dampens recoil significantly.

If you feel you still need something "more" to hold on to (some dislike the narrowness of Smith's 3rd Gen derilin grip), get the Hogue "Handall" rubber thingy, with the finger grooves. It slides on over the stock grip, widens it slightly, and between the tacky rubber and the finger grooves, your hand is really locked on. An aquaintance uses one on his 4566 and really likes it. Uncle Mike's makes a similar product.

With the 10mm Glocks, the choice there depends on what you're primary use for it will be. Either will be lighter than the Smiths, but the 29 is better for concealment for most people. In the midwest, I can CCW the 20 fine most of the year, except in the very hot summer time. If I lived in Florida or Texas, I'd already have a 29 or 30, or both. :)

For full size, check out the 1006. Stainless, ambi-safety, and as Glockorama says, it's got relatively mild recoil.

Put some Hogue grips on it to dress it up.

I wish the .10mm was still popular, I don't reload.

If you can find a Smith & Wesson 1006 in good condition then buy it, but if not then the Glock-20 will serve you well.

10mm....choices, choices!

First, unless you particularly like the Glock pistols, I'd stay away from a Glock. I personally do not like their feel when cycling. Sort of like holding a coil-over-shock during a compression and rebound stroke.

Looked at EAA Witnesses in 10mm, but was still weighing the overwhelming complaint on forums in reference to the factory customer support. Missed the opportunity to buy two of these pistols while debating the forum feedback. Since then, my gun dealers of choice have been unable to locate any 10mm Witnesses (over a 8 month period!).

I was eyeing a S&W 1066 for about a year. Was at the dealer debating over when I'd make an offer when another guy showed an interest. Made an offer that night and picked it up for $375. I am very impressed with it! Very accurate and light on recoil.

The same dealer came across a Delta Elite SS in a consignment deal. Picked it up for $500. Lucky day! Great looking pistol with very little use.

I have also switched from my trusty Springfield Armory 1911 45acp to the Delta Elite in USPSA matches. One word of warning.....be prepared to "lose" brass. Deltas have a tendancy to direct the ejected brass everywhere!

Overall, I am very impressed with both the Delta Elite and the S&W 1066. Both shoot well. I load my ammo to USPSA "major" caliber power factor, so they are not full-house loads by any means. If you are patient and get the word out to you favorite gun dealers, you can find deals on both pistols. I would recommend the S&W pistol strictly for the "loss of faith" in S&W (less demand) and they never seemed to achieve quite the cult following as Colt Delta Elites. Comparing "my" two 10mm's, the S&W 1066 is actually more accurate despite the shorter barrel.

Tomcatf14,

I like the S&W 10XX series of pistols, especially the 1006. Like many people have mentioned the price and accuracy are top notch. I like the weight of it to help soak recoil. I have shot the Delta and one of the Glock sub-compacts,I didnt care for them to much. Agree with HRG need to check which firearm feels and fits you best.

I love my 1006. The weight makes the recoil very easy to manage (even with hot loads) and the trigger is really nice. I am currently hunting for a 1066 or 1076 for CC as the 1006 is HUGE! :)

as to getting a firearm that feels the best, please note the grips on the S&W 10xx series are easily changed out from the straight to the curved backstrap and completely change the feel of the pistol, my preference is for the curved one, different grips can be obtained from S&W for $20
