Can the OP purchase a "free state" Glock 17 with normal 17rd magazines and take it with him to his new home in CA even though his new 2008-production Glock does not have pre-1994 high capacity magazines?
As I mentioned in another thread, if you think of a 17rd magazine as a piece of kiddie porn or two ounces of pot, you'll be on the right track to making the right decisions when it comes to California gun laws.

thanks

this is all helpful. thanks. since the law states that to transport firearms they must be cased and unloaded then i guess open carry is out of the question?

Open carry is permitted outside of urban areas, though it's unusual and likely to attract undue police attention in certain places. I've open carried while camping in a park on the far side of the ridge to the west of San Jose, for example, as the campsite was my domicile.

You should get yourself a copy of the 2008 California Edition of "How to Own a Gun and Stay Out of Jail." - http://www.gunlawpress.com/

Internet opinions are ubiquitous as a certain body part and worth what you pay for them, as they say.

Don Kilmer, in San Jose, is a stalwart gun rights activist and attorney, who can give you advice that's worth more than $0.00, and charge you for it if he's so inclined.

1)pistols - there is paperwork to fill out (available on line - can be handled thru the mail) for the pistols you want to bring in with you - and a time limit to do so. Supposedly you need a CA driver's license but I did it without that (didn't want to lose my NY Carry Permit).

You can keep the pistols in your home without further worry.

2) Get rid of all non-approved (i.e. "Assault weapons") guns and mags; i had to sell a few like an M1A, a Thompson, etc. Other long guns are fine and do not require any paperwork.

Re:mvpel

That was a good link you put up. It should be very helpful to Californians and folks that are about to become one. I wish they had a similar book for Silver State residents. It would help people around here if there was a book called How To Own A Gun In Nevada and Stay Out of Jail.

If anyone knows of such a publication can you please let us know. Thanks!

I can't see myself living in California. Leftwing politics mixed with criminal influx from Mexico is just about my private nightmare.

AFAICT from studying CA law, open carry is legal in cities, though subject to many restrictions, IF the firearm is unloaded and in a belt holster. Magazines also need to be carried openly (in a mag carrier on the belt if the magazine is loaded, in the gun is okay only if the magazine and chamber are empty). An unloaded firearm must have both the chamber and magazine empty.

However, OC in an urban environment is probably not a good idea. That said, a few people have tried it on occasion with no untoward consequences so far. I wouldn't want to try it myself.

Exceptions to legal OC of an unloaded firearm are in any state or local public building, meeting required to be open to the public, within 1000 ft. of school grounds, in a post office, or within any National or State park. There may be other laws or regulations; check with a lawyer.

I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, and you're likely to be arrested, beaten, and otherwise violated by merely daydreaming about firearms while in the state of California. :p

No Luck Yet

I tried to do a bit of internet searching for any book dedicated to gun ownership in Nevada. I haven't had any luck yet.

If anyone knows of such a publication please let me know. I don't want to violate any of the laws around here.

As an ex-Californian, all I got to say is it's a great place to be from. Be cautious about carrying firearms. Reading the law is one thing. You'll find that the hassle meter is very high in Southern California when it comes to carrying a weapon, except in certain places in the Sierra Nevada and remote desert.

There is a good gun club up Highway 128. Check it out:

It's a great place to break clay. Miss it dearly.
