For scriptures, 1st Corinthians 7:23 and Romans 13:4. Civil government is the SERVANT of God. When the servant makes himself God he has usurped his authority established by God and is no longer lawful. This is what is known as tyranny.

Lex Rex is probably the best book to answer this question. Be prepared, it is not light reading.

"....He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one"

Luke 22:36

Ask her to explain this one away.

"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property...Horrid mischief would ensue were the law abiding deprived the use of them" --Thomas Paine, 1775

I rather believe that the laws of man aren't worth a "squirt" without God and God fearing men to make and enforce just laws. God does not endorse any right of the people to make mockery of His law. "Be not deceived, God is not mocked. Whatsoever a man sows, that will he also reap."

There is a verse in the New Testament that says: (Romans 12:17-19)

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on YOU, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the lord.

I pay close attention when the bible says to live at peace with everyone IF IT IS POSSIBLE and up to ME. This implies that self defense is a legitimate God given right because it falls within these guidelines. It also rules out revenge as being different from self defense.

A direct reference on weaponary and self defense.
Luke 22:36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and
likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Then there's always Revelations 13:10, "...if anyone slays with the sword, with the sword he must be slain." If that's not a Biblical reference for the RKBA, I don't know what is...

Every nation has the government it deserves. - Joseph de Maistre

You could ask her if a wild animal, when attacked, can and should defend itself. If she concedes that it should, ask her why. Perhaps a basic right of self preservation with available means?

You don't have to consult the Bible for something so basic and natural a right as breathing, nor do you have to consult it for your natural right of self defense.

A couple of good sites are: 'Biblical Grounds and Guidance for Personal Arms Possession' at www.wzrd.com/home/ctdonath/Rants/Biblically Armed/ and 'The Bible and Gun Control' at www.gunowners.org. As to the Catholic Church, Thomas Aquinas had absolutely no problem with legitimate self defense--and he reconciled theology with the logic of Aristotle. Your lady friend may voluntarily relinquish HER rights if she chooses, but she is not obligated to by any means--and she certainly cannot waive them for others. God values her life as much as anyone elses' and expects her to preserve it as well. If anyone unlawfully attempts to do her serious harm she has an obligation to preserve herself. If she is responsible for the welfare of others, even more so.

Most of the people who attack us so quickly on these grounds have never done their own honest homework.

I find it amazing that a Christian would doubt that rights come from God and that she would see the government as more powerful than God in that respect.

Rick

Ask her if it is her right to worship God as she sees fit? Then ask her if this right comes from the government? Should the government license religion? I mean there have been some pretty crazy religious "cults" out there that have killed people... Heaven's Gate comes to mind. I think the slight inconvenience of obtaining a worship license is a small price to pay if it will just stop one person from joining a suicidal cult and save one life!

Now if she agrees that every living thing should defend itself when threatened, then is there really a difference between being threatened by a thug with a knife in an alley or a tyrannical government? If both mean to take your life or deny you your right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, then there is no difference.

The first step is registration, the second step is confiscation, the final step is subjugation.

Very interesting and educational post. Didn't Thomas Paine quote Scripture in "The Rights of Man"? Peruse that you may find some good things to use. Best of luck, BB.

What about Gospel Plow? Doesn't his site have some early American sermons on RKBA and Liberty? Who has the URL?

Point out that even a rose has thorns and the multitude of God designed self-defense systems in nature. A tortoise shell, a skunks spray, tooth and claw of canines and felines.

Ask her if she flinches when something flies unexpectedly close to her. This is another God designed natural defense mechanism.

The rush of adrenaline in the face of danger is another part of the self defense system.

Self-defense is necessary for the preservation of the species. And God has designed many defensive systems.

She might say that you shouldn't use anything that God didn't design for you. This is like saying we shouldn't use a car for transportation because God gave us feet. Man, by nature, is a tool user and a tool for self-defense is natural.
